OTARIS MAIN ROAD

COUNCIL AWAITING A REPLY. For some time past members of the Otaki Borough Council have been questioned regarding the proper formation of the main county road in the borough from Waerenga Road, at the southern borough boundary, to the railway crossing at the northern borough boundary, but it is stated that the trouble lies m the fact that the council has not been able to get anything definite from the Main Highways Board. On December 12 last the town clerk of the Otaki Borough Council (Mr. A. Wilson) wrote to the district engineer of the Main Highways Board, Wellington, as follows: "It has been brought to the notice of this council that an Order-in-Council has been sanctioned excluding from the Main Highways Board ' portion of the main county road in this borough, and my council is anxious to know whether the main highway is to be formed on the present main county road in this borough, or whether a new road is to be formed. I should lie glad to receive your reply in the matter so that I may place the same before my council." A Dominion reporter was informed that there are two alternative routes to the present main road. One, and the most probable, is a deviation just before reaching Waerenga Road corner at the southern borough boundary to cross the railway line and join up with the main county road on the northern side of the present railway crossing. Should this deviation fnke place, the informant stated it will mean taking a small amount of property from the natives and Mr. H. O.’Manz, but most of tins land is unoccupied. The other alternative is to continue the main county rend from Moutere House corner and cross the railway line at an angle to join up with the main county road on the top of the Waitohu Hill. Should the present route be adhered to it would also mean taking land from the natives to widen the existing road near the southern borough boundary, and it. is considered that the first-named deviation is the most suitable. This course would also do nwav with the present railway crossing. The matter, so the reporter was advised, is entirely held up pending a definite reply from the Main Highways Board, and this the Otaki Borough Council awaits.
