FATAL SHOOTING ACCIDENT By Telegraph.— Association. Nelson, March 28. A fatality occurred at the Bainham cheese factory between nine' and ten o’clock this morning. The factory manager (Mr. West) was found shot dead in the secretary’s office. Mr. West had borrowed a hammerless gun to shoot some stray cats that bad been causing annoyance. It is thought that his not being acquainted with the mechanism had resulted in the . gun being accidentaly discharged. The shot entered the body over the heart, and death must have been instantaneous. Mr. West weighed in the milk this morning, and at about ten o’clock his assistant, not noticing him about, went to look for him. The assistant was in the engine-room, part of the time, and would not hear a shot fired. Deceased was about 28 years of age, and had been in charge of the factory since January last year. He came originally from Rongotea, North Island.
TRAIN AND LORRY COLLIDE ' By Telegraph.—Press Association Christchurch, March .28. At 445 yesterday afternoon a train collided with a motor-lorry at the Templeton . railway crossing. Eyewitnesses of the accident state that both the lorry and train were travelling, slowly. The driver of the lorry (E. Suckling) was thrown out of his seat bv the impact, and he landed in front of the engine. There he was picked up by the projecting cow-catcher, thrown aside, and so saved from certain deathHis injuries, however, were severe, and he was taken to the hospital, where it was found he had suffered a fracture of the skull and severe head rounds. The motor-lorry was completely wrecked. . ' . • , To-day it was reported that buck.-, ling’s condition had improved.
MOUNT CARGILL ACCIDENT Dunedin, March 27. William Reed, the victim .of the Mount Cargill motor-lorry accident, was aged 42. He was buried under the wreckage, and almost instantly killed Kenneth McKenzie sustained a broken leg, and four other men including the driver, Frederick Cole, had superficial injuries. The lorry was wrecked. An examination of the wreckage showed that an important nut was missing from a radius rod of the steering r gear, and this was sufficient to cause the loss of control. C°le states that he found the vehicle failed to steer just before the smash.
