TIDYING UP
PAVING WORK PROGRESSING Although the weather has been somewhat broken and temperatures have been low, the work of paving in the city has made progress. Up till Saturday that section of Wakefield Street between Cuba Street and the free public library had been given a solid three-course treatment, and by Wednesday next, if the weather is fine, the pavement will be connected up with Victoria Street and Mercer Street.
While in this vicinity the city engineer deemed it advisable to clean up the narrow by-ways in that locality. During the week the greater part of Old Customhouse Street, and the whole of Cornhill, Farish, and St. Hill Streets have been given a hot-mix surface which should keep them in good order for some time.
A couple of gangs have been employed in preparation work in Upland Terrace during the past week, and a start will probably be made with the laying of the hot-mix on Wednesday.
