HORORATA AND FRANKLIN MEETINGS NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "Ths Watcher.”) Acceptances for the first day of the Wairarapa Racing Club’s Easter meeting will close to-night at 8 o’clock. The telegraph office at Featherston closes at 5 p.m Acceptances for all the first day’s events at the Feilding Easter meeting will close to-night at 8.30 o’clock. Excursion tickets by convenient - trains throughout the Manawatu and West Coast districts will be available for each day of the Feilding meeting. Acceptances for the first day’s events at the Hawera Trotting Club’s annual meeting at Easter will close to-night syt 8 o’clock. . \ Nominations for the autumn meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club and forfeit for the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes arid Manawatu Stakes are due to-morrow night at 9 o’clock. The trial grass gallop was available at Trentham on Saturday morning, and after the rain it was 1 a trifle slow. Modern beat off Misgovern at the end of seven furlongs, run in Imin. 34sec. Grand Knight, picked up by Outfit at the six-furlong post, took Imin. 35sec., but he was not bustled, and took 15sec. for the first furlong. Note sprinted five furlongs in Imin. ssec. Printempts having his first gallop since Nelson, ran half a mile in company with Black Mint. The. lastnamed pair will race at Tauherenikau. Orchid, who will probably race at Feilding and be ridden on the first day by B. H. Morris, took Imin. 23sec. to run six furlongs. Tresham and Royal Picture sprinted down the straight, a similar task being allotted Thomond. MpCauley’s team will be seen out at the Wairarapa meeting. The English colt, Royal Picture, will not be laced until next season, but he is growing into a very nice horse. Matu, who will probably race over hurdles at Feilding, ran seven furongs in company with Kilminster, the time being Imin 37sec. Zero Hour moved better than Pantagruel over half a mile. A. Goodman has in hand a fine big Kilbroney gelding out of Intermezzo, owned by Mr. J. O’Brien, of Wellington. After breakfast Fool’s Paradise and Royal Divorce trotted and cantered. They will probably leave for Riccarton on Wednesday night. Master Peter and Dubious sprinted half a mile, and Degage, having her first gallop for three months, . accompanied Sarty over six furlongs, in Imin. 20sec., Tannadice being beaten off. The. besr half-mile of the morning was the Msec. of the Surveyor gelding Theodolite, in W. Young's stable. Joyeuse, who will race at Tauherenikau, pulled hard in her work. D. Cotton will probably come up from the south to ride at the Wairarapa meeting. Nadarino may race there, while Indian Sage may contest his Feilding engagements. Kilbonsyth is at present engaged at both Riccarton and Ellerslie, and it is uncertain yet at which place he will be raced. Mr. Higgins is anxious to go to Ellerslie, and for that reason Kilbronsyth has been galloped two or three times the reverse way at Levin. He has shown a tendency to hang out badly, although his times have been satisfactory, and a decision will probably be made after he is given another trial the reverse way on Tuesday morning. In the meantime it is not good policy to forgo his Riccarton engagements until it is clear that the reverse way of galloping will not be against his prospects at Ellerslie. It is reported from the Wairarapa that none of iMr. Elgar's two-year-olds will be racing at Riccarton, while it is also unlikely that Licinius will make the trip. Owing to a misprint, it was made to appear that Royal Land carried tljlb. over-weight when he won the concluding event at the Rarigitikei Club’s meeting last week The extra poundage was only ijlb. The Rjccarton trainer A. McAulay passed through to Auckland on Saturday with Tarleton and Sun L'p, also Glentruin, who will be under his care during the trip, as T. H. Gillett was unable to get away, having Count Cavour and other horses racing at the Canterbury Jockev Club’s meeting at Easter. Tarleton is only engaged, at the Auckland Racing' Club’s meeting, but Sun Up and Glentruin will race at Avondale a week after the Ellerslie * fixture. It is understood that F. E. Jones will ride Listening Post at the Canterbury Jockev Club’s autumn meeting. The Southland crack is reported to be very' well. The light-weight jockey H. Burns is going north to ride larleton and Sun Up in their engagements at Auckland I'he death in England of Mr. George Bayntun Starky, formerly of Amberley, is announced. The late Mr. Starkv arrived in Lyttelton in 1881, and took up farming in the Amberley district, where he resided for many years, taking an’active interest in local affairs. He was founder of the Brackenfield Hounds, and was master for many years. He had also held the position of president of the Amberley' Steeple chase Club and later the Amberley Racing Club. He was also one of the oldest stewards of the C.J.C., and held office up to the time .of his death During recent years he has rarely been without a representative on the tracks, I and was a patron of F D Jones’s I stable. Among the horses who car- ‘ ried his colours with success were Week ‘ End, Mustard Pot, Blush, Tinihanga. md Economist.

Though Count Cavour was nominat ed for the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting he will not make the northern trip, but will do his Easter racing at Riccarton. He continues to get through his tasks in fine style and he should be a verv fit horse when he goes out for the Great Autumn Han-
