“It would have been an easy matti r for me to have put in extra steel when building that wharf, thus costing the board an additional £2OOO. Nobody would have been any the wiser,” said the Auckland Harbour Board’s engineer recently, when explaining a technicality to the board” (states the “Auckland Star”). “By jove, when we found out, though, your job wouldn’t be worth much,” exclaimed Mr. E. H. Inder. “Do I understand the engineer to say that he could spend an unnecessary £2OOO and we wouldn’t know anything about it?” asked an incredulous member. He got his answer quickly in a chorus of assent from the older members of the board.
