THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "Tha Watcher.”) Nominations for all events at the autumn meeting of' the Manawatu Racing Club will close on Tuesday next at' 0 p.m., when forfeit is also due for the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes and Manawatu Stakes. The Franklin and Hororata meetings will be held to-day. Enthusiasm has finished her racing career and has been sent to be mated with Limond. O. Cox' will take Reremoana and Lady Cavendish to Auckland next week. Lady Cavendish is not engaged at Ellerslie, but will be a starter in the All-Aged Stakes at Avondale, in which she will have to carry a Hlb. penalty Both horses are 'veil. W. Ravner will take a team of six to Auckland, leaving on Monday. They are Motley, Lysander, The Thorn, Mask, Deluge, and Anklet.’ F. Tillej will take Mandane, Tukia, and Limited to Auckland for the Easter meeting. R. Reed will ride Curraghmore and Kiliute at the Franklin meeting today. W. 11. Jones will ride Dan Quin, Judge’s Box, Mosaic, Winsome Boy, and Master Doon.

S. Reid will go south on Wednesday with Grand Knight, Minotus. Spode and Note. The rest of the team will race at Tauherenikau. B. H. Morris, H. Goldfinch, and T. Green will ride at Feilding on Easter Saturday and catch the boat to Lyttelton on. Easter Sunday, in order to do the two days of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. Star Shell rs now out of the hack class, but will be able to run out his Feilding nominations. The two races that Mandane had at Bulls will bring her forward for her engagements at Ellerslie,, but it is evident that the enforced spell since Christmas did not work to her advantage. Rational showed a glimpse of his old dash at Built' this week, but he ia just far enough up in the weights to get beaten. He will race at .Feilding at Easter.

The delay at the start of the two-year-old race at Bulls on Wednesday emphasises the necessity for the assistant starter being a man fully qualified for the job, instead of it being left to the voluntary efforts of an amateur. Country clubs, of course, at the present time are under a financial strain which means looking carefully at expenses, but for a professional task like- that of the starter and his assistant it is not good policy to try to run it too cheaply. Mr. O’Connor is being criticised for giving undue latitude to Commendation, but in fairness let it be stated that Commendation was kicked when lining up the first time by Miss Pat, and naturally was reluctant to go back and get another. It was most noticeable that, the efforts of the starter’s assistant only made him worse, while on the two occasions that Mr. O’Connor got down and placed him he stood perfectly. In the writer’s opinion it was better to give the public a run for their money and delay the start than to let a moderate fluke an unmerited win.

Mr. E. A. Caldow has purchased Mr. J. B. Gaisford’s interest in Euphonium, and the gelding raced in his colours at Bulls on Thursday. He ran a great race, and should not be long in returning some stake money. He has gone back to the stable of O. Cox, and will race at Feilding next week.

At Bulls this week Novar lacked the finishing punch which characterised his earlier efforts this season, but he should be worth remembering at Easter.

Royal Damon is extra smart. He gets plenty of racing, but apparently thrives on it, and as he is only a three-year-old his future looks particularly promising. In Para and Glenross Absurd is now credited with two winners of the Rangitikei Cup. Glenross scored well on Wednesday, and up to ten furlongs showed that he is able to hold his own in good company. Royal Land, who won the concluding event at Bulls, was formerly raced by Mr. F. Needham, of Palmerston North, who gave him up as a bad job, and he is now trained at Feilding. Royal Land, who is by Acre, shows the family pace, and now that he has come right he should not be long in winning again. Catcall has been carrying big weights creditably for some time past, and was rather unlucky not to score at Bulls on Thursday, but it is doubtful if the. form is good enough to say that she will be equal to Mandane and Oreum in the Great Northern Oaks.

Rangi Sarlo is very well at the pre- ■ sent time, and with any luck should be heard from in his immediate engagements F. J. Carmont has got a useful and promising sort in Kiladdie, a three-vear-old gelding by Kilboy out of Ladify. He ran two good races at Bulls, and should pav his way verv shortly. Flying Shot' a three-quarter brother to Depredation, raced well at Bulls. He is a nice looking three-year-old who has had a fairly strenuous time lately. He should be a good horse next season. Archeen had’ been galloping particularly well at Bulls prior to the meeting, and those who disregarded his form the first day found they were on a good thing on Thursday It would have taken a substantial rise in weight to have stopped him, and he should

be heard of again on the present trip. A. McAulay has made arrangements for a trip to Auckland with Tarleton and Sun Up. Both horses will be raced at the Auckland Racing Club’s Easter meeting, while Sun Up will also fulfil engagements at the Avondale meeting, a week later. Mr. L. C. Hazlett has Overdrawn and Ravenna engaged at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting, but the Riccarton trip is not a certainty, as they have also been nominated for RiverZaragoza followed up her first day s success at Oamaru by scoring again on the second day. She cime along with a strong run at the business end, and her two displays at the meeting left the impression that an even longer iournev than seven furlongs would suit her. There seems little doubt that she is at her best on a heavy track, and if she gets conditions to her liking she will be seen to advantage in other races during the autumn. Roman Archer, the winner of the Buckley Memorial Handicap at Oamaru on ■ Wednesday, is a four-year-old gelding, who was purchased as a yearling in Sydney by Mr. A. H. Fisher for 200 guineas. His sire, Bowman, who died some time ago, was a brother to Arrowsmith, while his dam Gaula is by Gaulus, a Gozo horse who had. a Melbourne Cup among his successes. Roman Archer had only won two races prior to his success this week—a mile hack' race at Gore last season, and a mile and a quarter hack race at the Dunedin summer meeting in December. He shapes like a stayer, and he may earn further honours over a distance. The presence of two North Island competitors, Mount Marta and Siaosi, will add considerable interest to the chief events at the Hororaia Racing Club’s meeting to-day.

“Lower Hutt.”—The wager is £1 on Misgovern when she started, 10s. from funds and 10s. stipulated. She was not a starter in the six furlong race. CHARLESTON’S DEATH Br Telegraph.—Pbess Association. Dannevirke, March 26. On' the second day of the Danevirke Racing Club’s autumn meeting, Messrs. Dwati Bros.’ Charleston, s.fter going about 100 vards from the barrier m the Telephone' Hack Handicap, fell down on the track without interference, and was subsequently shot by order of the stipendiary and club stewards. AH sorts of rumours were about on the course. A. M. Brodie, veterinary surgeon who on the following day examined the horse, at the request .of the secretary of the club, has furnished, a report showing that the horse was infested with worms, besides having organic ailments j and the indications pointed to the parasitic infestation, with the accompanying complications, together with kidney and bladder disease, accounting for the animal s behaviour prior to his death. WARWICK FARM MEETING BAD WEATHER OUTLOOK. * Sydney, March 26. Rain is greatlv interfering “ with the Randwick training tracks, which are thoroughly sodden, and the outlook for to-morrow’s Warwick Farm meeting, in which a number of New Zealand horses, including Windbag and Runnymede, are engaged, is not chee::ful.-r-Press Assn.

TROTTING

WELLINGTON MEETING TO-DAY

FINE FIELDS PROMISE GOOD SPORT

The autumn meeting of the Wellington Trotting Club will be held at Hutt Park to-day. Large nominations were received for all events, and the acceptances are well over the average, and promise to provide some excellent racing. The smallest field is seven, and it is a fairly tight class over a mile and a quarter. A pleasing feature of the programme is the support accorded to the Wellington High Class Handicap, a harness event over two miles for trotters. The class is 4.42 which is the fatest competed for in the Dominion, and it speaks well for the club’s enterprise in this direction, as there are too few races for the good class trotter. Provided the weather is fine there should be a large attendance and a successful meeting. There is a special train service to Petone, and buses will also run at frequent intervals. The first race is timed to start at noon.

There is not a large field in the Improvers’ Handicap, despite the class being slow enough to suit all owners, and'eight of the eleven runners are off the front mark. Tui Wildwood, Welcome Pearl, and Little Huia may be prominent. In the Beach Handicap; a mile and a half, there is sure to be a large field, and some promising pacers are engaged. Of those on the limit Direct Todd has been working well, whilst Hope Dillon and Airman gan muster a good turn of speed, but neither are good stayers. His Pal on 12 yards may be the pick of the handicap, although Shine Soon raced well at New Brighton.

The mile and a half trotters’ race in harness should be an interesting contest. Hillgrove was well supported at Timaru, but performed badly. Hardy Grattan is an improving sort, and will receive local support. The Australian mare Fancy Pronto can go fast, but is a little unreliable at the start. If she* begins well she should make matters interesting.

The chief event, the Armstrong Handicap (harness), over two miles, has attracted a good field. Of the pair on the limit Cardinaid Logau. may prove superior. Becky Logan and Talent on the 12yds. mark are both racing well at the present time. The former was beaten at New Brighton by Waitaki Girl last week, and the racing should improve her. She ran creditably at the previous Wellington meeting, and may go one better to-day. Talent has raced here previously without success, and he is also engaged in the concluding event, as is CardinrJl Logan. Tlie Aucklander, Dick Dillon, has been racing well this season, but may too partial to a fast run race Fashion Queen is verv unreliable at the start. Judge Hancock has been steadily improving, but he is now on a mark which will extend him to the utmost. If Native Chief begins well he should run a good race, but the Aucklanders All Bell and Doctor Dillon would be better 1 over a shorter course, and the first-named is in the mile and a quarter event. Becky Logan, Talent, and Native Chief may run prominently. At the club’s last meeting the mile saddle events were poorly supported, but there is a field of eighteen in the -Members’ Handicap to-day. His Pal had done a good deal of his training work in the saddle, and if unsuccessful in the Beacli Handicap may run well over the shorter course Direct 'I odd may also be seen to advantage, as he is a useful saddle horse. Shine Soon and Winter Audubon should show up, as both raced well last week at New Brighton Good reports are current concerning Keviulea, on the limit. There is quite a high-class field for the two-mile trotters' race Wild Lad and Young Blake on the limit both have plenty of speed, but are inclined to break. It will be interesting to observe Young Blake when driven by Tompkinson, who has charge of him while P. Riddle is in Australia. Mangoutu is unreliable, and unless John Mauritius improves liis recent form does not suggest he has a very good chance. However, the Hutt track may suit him. Master Audo is a greatly improved trotter, and with Bettv Moko should race well.' The latter has some smart performances to her credit in Auckland. The Gisborneowned Peterwah was reckoned unlucky in not winning a good stake at _ the Auckland summer meeting. He is a wonderfully improved trotter, _ and should prove difficult if produced in his best form. Young Blake, Master Audo, Bettv Moko, and Peterwah may be prominent.

Peter Itleet, on the limit in the Belmont Handicap, received solid support at Timaru, but raced badly, but he mav do a great deal better over two miles. Denver Wood is a good stayer, and for that reason deserves respect, but Yoicks, if in his best form, may run very well. Of the seven in the mile and a quarter event all claim earlier engasrements except Peter Binpen and Golden Devon, and much will depend upon the running in the earlier races It should be a capital contest, in which Gohlen Devon would race well with a pood bepinninp. and form also points to Talent, Peter Bingen, and All Bell showing up.
