SUGGESTED SHIFTING OF HUTT PARK

PETONE UP IN ARMS At the meeting of the Petone Borough Council last night the question came up of the proposal by the Lower Hutt Borough Council to shift Hutt Park. Councillors expressed the opinion that as far as Petone was concerned, no other site would be as suitable as the present one. Councillor Scholefield said that he would like to remind the. Hutt Borough Council that Petone was a co-trustee of Hutt Park. To him it appeared as though the Hutt wanted to shift the park north so that it would act as a buttress between the Hutt and “the industrial i:r«ia.” Hutt wished to have all the advantages and . none of the disadvantages of an “industrial area.” If the park had to be moved then it was the speaker’s opinion that it should be moved to Gear Island. The Mavor: One gathers that their idea is to’sliift the park to the site recently purchased from Mr. Riddiford on which it was proposed to establish a garden suburb. It appears that notwithstanding all the plans that have been prepared, the garden suburb proposal will not be given effect to. Just what obiection there can be to having a Dark near an industrial area I fail to see. Here in Petone we have a bowling green, croquet lawns, and tennis courts right alongside the municipal gasworks. What is there to be. gained in shifting the park ? Look at all the money that has been spent on it. If it is Shifted to Gear Island, which is quite near, its present situation, where is the gain? Eventual! v it was decided, on the motion of Councillor Scholefield, to instruct the Petone representatives on the Hutt Park Committee to oppose any proposal having for its object the lessening or removal of Hutt Park’s situation. , Councillor Jacobsen thought that the Eastbourne Borough. Council . should be written to inquiring their views on the question. Petone had been treated with discourtesy bv Hutt, but they should treat Eastbourne with courtesy. An amendment in this connection was carried.
