LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNION

MEETING OF COUNCIL Tho bi-monthly meeting of the council of the League of Nations Umon (Wellington branch) was hold last Thursday evening. There was a good attendance, the following being present: The president (J)r. Gibb), in tho chair, Archbishop O’Shea, Bishop Sprott. Rev. W. M. Holland, Rev. R. Inglis, Mr. P. Fraser, M.P.; Messrs. B. L. Dallard, P. J. O’Regan, R. 11. Hooper, E. S. Maunder, Misses Coad,- Kane, McGill, and the secretary. . Apologies for absence were received from Mesdamcs J. C. Webb and J. Wright, and Messrs. W. Hopkirk' and 11. H. Cornish. The secretary reported that the organiser’s campaign in Wellington had resulted in the sum of £9O being raised, with further promises making it about £lOO. It was resolved that a short leaflet, “Now Zealand and the League of Nations,” prepared by Miss Coad, be printed for the use of the organiser, and that an effort should be made to have it published in the daily and weekly Press of the Dominion and in the chief religious papers. The secretary reported that no further information had been received as to the visit of Sir H. Lunn, but a letter was expected in a few days. The treasurer’s report was presented and showed a balance in hand of £B4. Correspondence was read from the overseas secretary dealing with the advantages and responsibilities of affiliation with the Federation of League of Nations Societies, in answer to a request from the council. The arguments for affiliation as set forth were considered satisfactory, and it was decided to send the letter to the Dominion council with the approval of this branch for affiliation provided the assessment to the funds of the federation does not prove too . high. Correspondence was also read from the honorary treasurer of the “Save the Children” Fund. Inviting the co-opera-tion of the Wellington branch of the League of Nations Union in establishing a central executive committee for the fund, and enclosing a resolution passed by the Hamilton branch in favour of a vigorous appeal on behalf of the fund. A conference is being called to discuss the subject and to form the central committee. The president, tho secretary and Mrs. J. C. Andersen were appointed to represent the Wellington branch.

With regard to the visit to Palmerston North of Mr. J. H. Chapman, member of the economic and trade section of the League of Nations secretariat at Geneva, it was reported that an invitation had been sent to him to meet the council of the Wellington branch, and Rev. R. Inglis, who had already been in touch with him, was empowered to make some arrangement with him on behalf of the council.
