BRITISH BOWLERS

A DAMP AFTERNOON AT ' THORNDON

ANOTHER WIN FOR VISITORS

When rain fell so heavily yesterday morning it was considered that the day’s fixture for the British bowlers, against the Thorndon, Karori, Khandallah, Johnsonville, and Otaki Clubs would have to bo called off, but as the prospects generally brightened up towards noon, it was decided to go on with the games. The teams assembled at the Thorndon Club’s grCeu at 2.30 p.m., where they we.ro giceted by the president of that club (Mr. G. Johnson), who was supported bv Messrs. H. B. Roberts, F. Jacobs, IL Satherley, and M. E. Nichols, representing the Karori, Johnsonville, Otaki, and Khandallah Clubs respectively. Mr. Johnson said he wished to express a welcome to the notable British bowlers, and to add to the chorus of appreciation of their visit on behalf of the clubs they were to meet, and who were' prepared to give them as good a game as they could. Thev all knew that the Britishers were true sportsmen and good fellows, and they had to thank them for coming so far to teach them something about the game, and in matters of deportment. He congratulated the team on the number of wins secured on the tour, and hoped sincerely that it would not be long before they pair] another visit to New Zealand. (Applause.) The British captain (Mr. G. Wright) thanked the clubs concerned for the hearty reception which had been given lt was what they had been given to expect before they arrived in New Zealand, and he was pleased to say that they had met node but true sportsmen. Of the games played they had practically an equal number of wins , and losses. They might have done better, perhaps, were it not for the continual round of pleasure and the splendid way they had been received everywhere. ' After cheers had been exchanged the British bowlers sang two of their choruses before they proceeded to chase "kitty" up the sodden green. It rained gently but persistently throughout the afternoon, but with the aid of waterproofs and umbrellas, the visitors stuck to it and won with a big margin of points to spare. RESULTS OF THE PLAY. The game between Captain Wright and President Johnson was contested in the gayest spirit, and was well fought, to the end, the Britishers being just a little too persistent for the local players. Yeoman" service was lent Wright by Melbourne Orchard (the exChristchurch bowler), who showed v"ry fine form even with the green in a swampy condition. Mr. Orchard wan the bowler who (in London) worked'so hard to bring the tour of the Britishers about; BRITISH TEAM REUNION SOME INTERESTING PRESENTATIONS. A very jolly final reunion of the •members of the British bowling team was held at the Grand Hotel on Wednesday night, when the captain (Mr. George Wright), who presided, said it was only right and proper that they should meet in social harmony once more before the close of what had been a very pleasant tour through Austra lia and New Zealand. The spirit was accepted, and the result was a very happy time. . During the even ing a presentation of an illuminated address, signed by every member ol the team, was made by- Mr. William Harding, who commended the tact and uniform good feeling which had characterised Mr. Wright’s control of the team from beginning to end. Mr. 'Walter Wake, the manager uf the team (who was four years president of the English Bowling Association), was presented by the team with a purse of sovereigns as some tangible return .for the helpful way he had engineered the team on the tour.
