FORMAL PROTESTS

AGAINST ABOLITION OF COUNCIL

MEMORIAL TO NEW SOUTH WALES GOVERNOR CITIZENS’ PETITION TO THE KING Sydney, February 4. The memorial protesting against the abolition of the Legislative Council has been handed to the Governor with a request that he forward it to the Dominions Office. The signatories to the memorial submit, inter alia, that the Government came into office with a limited mandate; that the constitutional procedure for reconciling differences between the two Houses was not followed; that the facts and constitutional position .bearing on the appointment of additional members and on the abolition of the Council had not accurately or fully been put before the Governor by the Ministry; that the abolition of the Council was definitely excluded from the policy on which the Government was returned to power, and therefore not approved by the people; 'hat abolition is a fundamental alteration of the constitution which should not be made until it has been approved by .the people. The Citizens’ Petition, praying the King to withhold his signature, has now been drawn up, and will be circulated in all parts of the State. Arrangements, are being made tor holding protest meetings throughout New South Wales, and for a monster meeting in Sydney. —Press Assn.
