THE RACING WORLD

EGMONT MEETING TONES STAKES WON BY SURVEYOR OPEN SPRINT TO POUMA (By Telegraph—from “The Watcher.”) Wanganui, February 4. The summer meeting of the Egmont Racing Club was concluded to-day in fine weather. The veteran Surveyorscored a popular win in the Tonks Stakes from Imperial Spark and Bright Day, being well suited by the slow pace in the early stages. Pouma defeated The Lamb and Sleet in the open sprint. There was a large attendance of the public, and the totalisator handled £27,986 10s., as against £28,026 twelve months ago, a decrease of £39 10s.

An exhaustive inquiry was held into the accident which occurred in the running of tire Nolan Cup the first day, when Bright Knight fell and brought down Mountain Ore and Catcall. It was found that the mishap was purely accidental, being caused by Bright Knight getting on to tire heels of Mint Leaf. The two boys in hospital, Dombroski and Gilmer, are recovering. Mr. J. Paterson, of Auckland, had a good day, winning with Surveyor and Uralla, and dead-heating with Bustler. As Pelham won the first day, he had an exceptional meeting. OKAIWA HURDLES.

Koauau and Bustler claimed most attention in the Hurdles, and over the business stages of the journey they completely outclassed the opposition. Koauau was taken up to the leaders five furlongs from home, while Bustler had more ground to make up and did not appear on the scene until three furlongs from home. It looked at one stage as if he would win outright, but Bowden got to work with' vigour on the favourite, and made a dead-heat of it. Sansolino ran the best race of the beaten lot, without having any chance of winning. WAIMATE HANDICAP.

• Pelham and The Lamb, were solid favourites for the open sprint from Pouma, and fair support came for all tire runners except Avola. Pelham got knocked right back in the early stages, but ran a good race afterwards. The Lamb had every chance, but was not good enough to give Pouma 211 b. The latter was always near the front and likely to win. Sleet was early in a good position, but lost it on the turn, and was a little unlucky. She should soon be doing better. Quillfire ran a good race for a hack, and, “from the support, it was expected. Oration again faded out in the straight, but he looks short of a gallop or two, and he may soon be found running on better. Bonogue and Avola failed to show any form. MAIDEN HANDICAP. Windbag was a solid favourite for the maiden race. She duly won, but had to do her best in the straight to beat Royal Mint and Midnight Camp. Royal Mint was a bit unlucky. The others were a moderate lot, but Petre, a sister to Lipsol, may improve. TONKS STAKES. The first day’s showing of Bright Day caused him to go out a hot favourite for the principal handicap, Yoma being a good second choice. The race was again run like the Cup—a muddling pace in the early stages, giving way to a sprint home. The first six furlongs took lmin 21 2-ssec., leaving the last half to be run in 49sec. Under the circumstances Surveyor was well suited, and when it came to sprinting home he had it well on everything. His win was very popular. Town Bank ■and Yoma took 'turns at slowing down the field in the early stages, but they gave way to Bright Day before the turn, and were well beaten at the finish. Taking Town Bank to the front early could not be said to have improved his chances. , Income did not run so well as in the. Cup, and Clarinda ran badly. Despite the fact that she got into 'trouble in the straight, Imperial Spark tan a creditable race under his light weight, but Vaward was not good enough. MEREMERE HANDICAP. First Acre, considered unlucky the first day, was a firm favourite for the hack sprint Empire Camp being a good second choice from several others evenly backed. The, favourite only just scrambled home from Glengariff, after appearing to be winning nicely a hundred yards, from the post. Glengariff put in a great burst up the straight, and, better placed early, must have won. Argue showed brilliant pace throughout, and was well clear at the half-mile, but he stopped in the run home. Empire Camp was squeezed back at the start and never recovered the lost ground, although he finished well up in sixth place. Horomea was well place throughout, .and he should soon improve. Tip Tree, although meeting First Acre on only 71b. worse terms, was not sighted on the journey. Willow Wai ran a fair race. Star Shell is not yet ready to do his best. . NOR JI AN BY WELTER HANDICAP. Star Area ano Uralla were almost equal favourites for the open Welter Handicap, but Rehutai and Tactician were solidly supported. The wellbacked horses were always handy, and in the finish Uralla scored nictly from the back, though had Tactician got an opening a little earlier in the straight he may have got home. Irapuka-ran a good race, as did also Star Area, while Rehutai, leading into the straight, looked like bringing off a surprise, but her condition failed her over the last bit, and she finished seventh. Attractive was again up at the top of the straight and finished fifth.. Shut Eye ran a fair race. ELECTRIC HANDICAP. Toapaiti was a hot favourite for the Electric Handicap, but he was well beaten, the race resulting in another dead heat—the second of the meeting. Orcades. but for running wide at the turn, would have won.

INAHA HACK HANDICAP. Novar just - got up in time to win the Inaha Hack Handicap from Diogenes. Ladv Anstruther and Anchor showed the wav to the turn, where Diogenes made his effort. He looked to have the race won, but Novar finished iust a little better, the margin being a nose. No Response, a hot favourite was not a likelv winner at any stage. Kilmiss ran up into fourth place at the end. DETAILS OF THE RACING OKAIAWA. HURDLES, of 200 sovs. 11 miles. 7 Mr. T. B. Gainsford’s br. g. Koauau, by All Red — Harmonious, Gyrs., 10.8 (W.
