TRENTHAM RACES

ENTHUSIASM WINS WELLINGTON CUP LIMITED BEATS LADY CAVENDISH IN STAKES CAWNPORE TAKES TELEGRArH HANDICAP (By “The Watcher.”) ' In brilliant weather and under perfect track conditions the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting opened at Trentham yesterday. Enthusiasm won the principal handicap of the meeting, the Wellington Cup, from Te Monanui and Star Stranger. In the Wellington Stakes, the two-year-old Limited beat the favourite, Lady Cavendish, in a close finish, Nincompoop being third. The surprise of the day occurred in the Telegraph Handicap, which went to the Aucklander Cawnpore, with Licinius and Pelham in the places.

The public summed up the posibilities of the Wellington Cup exceedingly well. It was a very fine race throughout, and it was unfortunate that it was marred in the concluding stages by interference caused by Enthusiasm coming over to a bunch, in which Star Stranger and Te were most conspicuous, but which also included Grand Knight and Gala Day.. What would have happened had the incident not occurred is merely a matter of conjecture, but it certainly spoilt what would have been one of the .most thrilling finishes seen in the Wellington Cup. An inquiry was subsequently held, when it was decided to caution M. DlcCarten, it being considered that Enthusiasm fell away from the whip, and that the benefit of the doubt was entitled to the rider. No other action was taken. The winner, who is now in her sixth year, is owned by the .popular Hunterville sportsman, Mr. T. Duncan, and was bred by Mr. J. Goring Johnston. She had eight races as a two-year-old, winning once at the Wanganui autumn meeting, was three times second, and once third. It was as a three-year-old that she made a name for herself, starting fourteen times and winning seven times, her victories, including a dead-heat in the Oaks with Gold Light, the New Zealand Derby outright, Great Northern Derby, and the Great Northern Oaks. The following year she failed to reproduce her form, having twelve starts for only, one win and three seconds, the win being the Summer Cup at the Auckland Club’s summer meeting. Last year she was. again a moderate performer, having six starts without a win, running second twice. This season she made her reappearance at the Feilding spring meeting, and was in a minor place on the second day. At the recent Manawatu meeting she was narrowly defeated by Clarinda in the Manawatu Cup, and on the second day ran very badly and was not started on the concluding day. She won the Wellington Cup with all her old-time brilliancy and provided she will race consistently in the future must be taken into consideration in any event in which she starts. She was turned out in great order by F. Tilley. The second horse, Te DTonanui, ran a "Splendid race, and roust take high rank amongst the best handicap horses that have raced in this country. The rapid progress that this five-year-old colonial-bred horse has made from the ranks of the hacks early in the season has previously been commented upon, and it is quite certain that the best has not yet been seen of him. Star Stranger must be considered a first-class three-year-old. Tie had none of the luck of the race, and may possibly have been the winner with a fair run.

The Telegraph Handicap was a very fast race and saw the Australian-bred Cawnpore, owned and trained at Takapuna, win from Licinius and Pelham. Cawnpore raced prominently at the Auckland summer meeting, being a winner on one of the days, and although he failed in the recent Thames meeting held at Takapuna, it was considered that his failure was due to 'the small track, and the contention that the practically straight six furlongs of the Trentham course would suit him better was well borne out. Cawnnore. who wns bred in Victoria, cost Dlr. Alison 425,gn5.

Very fine racing was witnessed in all the events, and it was conducted under brilliant weather conditions and on a perfect track. The large crowd which attended had never had a more enjoyable day’s sport. Compared with the first day of last year’s meeting, which marked the opening of the new stands and saw a large number of visitors from all parts, the crowd was well up to what could be expected on a tnid-week day. Amongst those present were the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates), other members of the Ministry, Sir George Clifford (nrcsident of the Racier Conference'. Mr. H. F. Nicoll (president of the New Zealand Trotting Conference), and other prominent sportsmen from all parts of New Zealand. The track was in great order and fast times were hoisted. For the eight races the totnh'safor handled -ciqeqp winch is a slight decrease of £176 10s. on tlie suin of £48,-IRS 10s. handled on Cup Dav of Gst- veer APPRENTICES’ PLATE.

Dlosaic finished up a slightly better favourite than Kilbronsyth for the Apprentices’ I’l'ite, tnd tlie only one at all supported of the others was Arpent. The favourite, who drew No. 1, was early in trouble, and when half the journey was gone was a long way back. In the straight he put up a great race and finished fifth. Kilbronsyth held a good position throughout the race, and in the finish was able to stay on and beat off a late strong run by Wristlet, who had to make a greater effort in the concluding stages. First Acre was always well up, but could do no bettei than third. Arpent was not too well placed, but ran a creditable race. Nadarino was very prominent for five furlongs, when he was done with, and his stable-mate, Dlinotus, finished much better, after being a long way back in the earn stages of the race Westbroke began well, and showed a lot of speed for six furlongs. Elysianor ran a fair race, covering a lot of ground. The winner has been one of the roost improving hacks in commission for some weeks now, and is still a long way off his best effort. The time of this race was very fast for hack company. FITZHERBERT HANDICAP.

Gleniuuis was made favourite for the tgp-yeaispid handicap, front thfi bracks

Lucky Days and Vertigern, with the other bracket, Note and Climax, almost as well backed. There was also plenty of support for Paper Boy and Lady Desmond. The field gave a good deal of trouble at the start, the principal offender being Lady Desmond, and Eltlfein was also very barrier shy. Once they were let go, however, Lady Desmond showed plenty of speed, apd although not actually in front in. the very early stages she was first into the straight, and nothing had a chance of getting to her. She is by Limond out of that great galloper Bronze, and comes from the successful stable of O. Cox. She was purchased as a yearling for 300 guineas. Sir George Clifford’s representative Front Rank, who is three-quarter brother to Adjutant, and Dame Straitlace’s half-brother, was not amongst the leaders in the early part, but he showed great staying qualities, and. finished on well, just getting up in time to beat the favourite, while he was also rapidly overhauling the winner. Note was prominent early, but had no chance in the real issue. Paper Boy was a long way back in the early stages, and finished on well into fourth place. The favourite ran a fait race, and hung on well. WELLINGTON CUP. The bracketed pair, Star Ranger and Star Stranger, were always favourite for the Cup, in which The Banker and Beacon Light were the only absentees. Enthusiasm was a solid second choice, with Te Monanui. the Grand KnightRoval Divorce-Fool’s Paradise bracket, and Listening Post the best backed of the others. Gala Day was very well supported. Surveyor was nibbled at, but the rest went out at long prices. It was a very fine contest, in which the best backed horses filled the places, but it was unfortunate that the winner in making her run should in the last furlong seriously interfere with Star Stranger and Te Monanui at a very critical stage, while Gala Day and Grand Night were also sufferers bv this same incident. Star Stranger had previouslv at the six-furlong post got into trouble, so that he never had any of the hick of the race. He may not have beaten Enthusiasm without the interference, nor may have Te Monanui, but it is difficult to judge to what extent it affected their chances. The top-weight, Te Monanui, ran a great race. He was not prominent in the early part, but as thev turned for tome he was holding a handy position on the rails and finished very well. Listening Post was amongst the rear division early, and finished well up. As they ran out of the straight Enthusiasm was whipperin of the’bunch, although Muraahi was actually last, a long way back. Enthusiasm did not put in an appearance until round the turn, where she made her run on the outside and sustained it until she was up with the leaders, with a furlong to go. She may have won without the interference, and it is a pity that a fine performance of this sort should have been, marred by the occurrence. Grand Knight ran a great race, being prominent all the way, and he was perhaps one of the greatest sufferers through the interference in this race. Royal Divorce and Fool’s Paradise were nrominent in the early stages and for the greater portion of the journey, but thev did not run the distance out, aiid Royal Divorce pulled up very lame. Surveyor got into a lot of trouble in the running and then ran a fine race into eighth place. Tanadees was never prominent, and Muraahi was always well back. Star Ranger led the field from the mile post until well into . the straight, when he was beaten. Clarinda and Treshani never threatened danger, but Waetea ran up in the middle stages and ran a creditable race. I Gala Day was another whose chances were affected bg Enthusiasm’s crossing, and he was always amongst the leading halfdozen, running a very fine race. Kalakaua was not verv prominent and finished last but Dlartulla ran a gnat race and finished fourth. The pace was solid all the way, and the time equals the record for the race held by Maioha and Insurrection, while it is only Isec. outside the Australasian record for the distance held at Randwick by Gala Dav. TRENTHAM lIIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP. Gamecock was scratched . for the Trentham High-Weight Handicap, and of the seven runners Mask was a solid favourite. He never looked in danger of being beaten, being in the lead al the way with Kilorum. A couple of cuts with the stick at the top of the straight saw him draw away to win comfortably. Kiloriini ran up to recent form, and The Tank ran a creditable race. Santiago ran up third on the Home turn from a position in the rear, but was unable to sustain his run. I lie race was notable for the fact that they ran throughout and finished almost in the same order. Kilburn may win before the meeting is out. WELLING TON STAKES. Sleet and Lady Desmond were the scratchings in the Wellington Stakes. For a long time Lady Cavendish and Nincompoop were backed pound for pound, but towards the end of the Letting Lady Cavendish drew away, and finished up almost twice as well fancied. Amongst the two-year-olds there was good support for Limited. The favourite ran an excellent race, and just failed to beat Limited, which proves again that it takes a first-class, or even a. champion, three-year-old, to win this 1 race. Limited showed great brilliance, and must be ranked amongst the best two-year-olds of the season. Nincom--1 RP9R Ujj early, but he wa* well

beaten in the finish. The Thorn was I running last with Battlement for the better portion of the journey, and in finishing a good fourth drew attention to his prospects over a longer.distance. The others were outclassed. The winner was bred bv Mr. G. DI. Currie, and is a full brother to that once good sprinter Absurdum. He brought top price at the last sale of Koatanui yearlings, 750 guineas, being sold the same dav as Commendation and Lady Desmond. The race was run in very good time. ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP. Modem and Tommy Dodd were the favourites for the Anniversary Handi-. cap, with Father O’Flynn the best backed of the others, several of whom were very evenly fancied. Modern was always well placed, being one of the leaders throughout, but she was beaten bv a better horse in Tommy Dodd, who put in an appearance on the turn, and in the finish won rather comfortable. There is no doubt that this four-year-old Solfcrino gelding has yet to see his best performance. Economist ran a very creditable race into fourth place after being well back in the early stages. En Route ran a very fair race, and Printemps showed a lot of his old dash in finishing third, but he was unable to make any impression on the two who finished in front of him. He suffered interference at the five furlong post, which may have prevented him ’doing better. Retrospect, Father O’Flynn, Royal Diadem, and Rouex did the best of the others, the latter being actually last at one stage of the race. Agitato ran a very good race for seven furlongs. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP. After Enthusiasm’s win in the Cup Tamatete, who drew No. 1, was made favourite for the open sprint, Hipo being a solid second choice. Black Cat, Pencus, Orchid, Set Sail, and Shirley were well supported. The favourites were never very prominent, the race going to Cawnpore, who dashed up at the false rail and wore down Licinius, who had been in the. lead practically all the way. Cawnpore was unplaced at Takapuna last Saturday, but he was well suited by the Trentham track. Licinius ran his best race to date, and was unlucky to strike the winner. Set Sail was well placed throughout, and hung on well into the fourth place. Pelham ran a very good race, and was finishing well. Shirley got out well, but ran fairly wide coming into the straight, and finished fifth. Hipo was being hard ridden a long way from home, and never really threatened danger. Ilka was one of the pacemakers early, but faded out of the picture in the finish. Black Cat was unlucky, failing to get away well. Deluge . and Mimetic were most disappointing, being tire last pair to pass the post, Mimetic running off the course on the turn, while Deluge was fairly well placed at the top 'of the straight. RUAPEHU HANDICAP.

In the big field of hacks for the concluding event, the public still stuck to the Fordell stable, and made Ohui a pronounced favourite. A strong run set in towards the last on Polyphemus, and the half-brother to Roval Blood finished up a second favourite by two tickets from Dal Eaton. Victory Bond was the best backed of the others, amongst whom betting took a wide range. Ohui was drawn off the course, and although she was well placed, early, she failed to be conspicuous once the straight was entered. On the other hand, Polyphemus, who drew close to the rails, was in front practically throughout, and he won well, decisively demonstrating his superiority. Victory Bond showed a lot of speed in the early stages, but faded right out in the straight. Diogenes was expected to run well, but was never prominent. Mime ran a creditable race. Two outsiders, Bon March and King Broney, fought out the finish for second, and

both came from the back, showing superior stamina to a bunch which included Joy Bird and Dal Eaton, both of which were being proclaimed in the run home. Bevis ran a creditable race, but the remainder were never amongst the possibilities.
