EXHIBITION CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY
OPENING DAY’S PLAY

Dunedin, January 15. The exhibition championship tennis tournament opened at the Anderson Bay courts to-day. It is planned to last four days. A special girls’ singles, for which there are eleven entries, was added at the last moment. In addition to men’s singles and doubles and ladies’ singles and doubles championships, there are mixed doubles and handicap events for all classes. Rain fell during the afternoon and play was abandoned for the rest of the day. A start was made in the morning with the men’s and _ ladies’ singles championships, for which there are 32 entries, a number of players from Canterbury, South Canterbury, Otago and Southland taking part. The first round of the men’s singles championship was almost completed. Bray easily defeated Hammond in the second round. Manchester (Wainmte) crer ted surprise by defeating Jensen in a three-set match. Rawlinson had a stiff game against Bell, whom he defeated. Miss L. Turner defeated Mrs. Tregejir in a three-set contest in the first round, and Miss E. V. White beat Mrs. Sharpe in the second round. No other events have proceeded any distance yet.
