BATTLE BETWEEN ASSEMBLY AND COUNCIL.
Sydney, January 14. In the Legislative Council, Mr. A. C. Willis, the Leader, gave notice for next sitting day of the introduction of a Bill to abolish the Legislative Council. The Legislative Council debated the 'Electoral Amendment Bill, and by 30 votes to 29 decided that amendments it made when the Bill was first before it must stand.
The Legislative Assemblv appointed a Select Committee of the House to inquire into the reasons of the Council’s action.—Press Assn.
AN HONOURABLE ARRANGEMENT REPUDIATED. (Rec. January 15, 9.5 p.m.) Svdney, January 15. An echo of the defeat of the Government in the Legislative Council ovet the Electoral Bill was the decision of a meeting of the Labour Party that in view of the vital importance to the Labour movement of the passing, of Government legislation, and as planks of the Labour platform must come before every other consideration, the party will not recognise any pairs given in the Legislative Council, and instructs any member who has granted a pair to discontinue it at once. This means the repudiation of an honourable political arrangement with the Nationalists, but the motion was carried with only one dissentient.—Press Assn
