MINERS ENTOMBED
TERRIFIC EXPLOSION IN COLLIERY LARGE NUMBER BELIEVED TO BE DEAD RESCUE PARTIES HAMPERED BY FIRE By Tbleghafu.—P».Ess Association. Copyright. (Rec. January 14, 5.5 p.m.) . Vancouver, January 13. Telegrams from Wilburton, Oklahoma, state that 105 miners have been entombed as the result of a terrific explosion in a coal mine there during the night. Some of the victims are still alive and able to converse with the rescuers, who entered the mine workings by way of the air shaft tipis morning, but most of the men are believed to have been killed instantly. The only known survivors are eight negroes, who emerged from the mine late in ’ the afternoon. They told of seeing the bodies of comrades while working their wav to the air shaft, from which they were rescued. About seventy of the miners were negroes. Fire added to the difficulties encountered by the rescue parties, who are seeking’ three other men believed to be still living.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. 65 BODIES LOCATED (Rec. January 14, 11.10 p.m.) Vancouver, January 14. Later information from Wilburton states that hope for any of the ninetythree miners entombed in the coal mine explosion on Wednesday has been abandoned. A total of sixty-five bodies has been located. The explosion was caused by gas. —Reuter.
