A start will be made this week at Wellington on the preparation of the Tulanekai for the laying of the new submarine telephone cable across Cook Strait. Captain Bollons proceeded to Auckland on Tuesday to take over the Hinemoa, which haa been lying there since the end of December. The crew of the Tutanekai left W’ellington yesterday for Auckland. The Hinemoa will be brought down to Wellington early next week, and will proceed from here on her circuit of the North Island lighthouses. THE MAKURA. The Makura, from San Francisco, left Rarotonga at 6.30 p.m. last Monday for Wellington. The vessel is due here on Monday next. THE PAKEHA . . An expected arrival at W’ellington this morning is the ShsTr, ■ SavlU, and . Albion Co.’s steamer I’akeha from Lyttelton. ■ The vessel will berth at Glasgow W’harf to fill up. and is to. leave here- at daybreak on January 19 for London, via Panama. CAMBRIDGE AT AUCKLAND. The Federal Co.’s steamer Cambridge arrived at Auckland early last evening from Liverpool. The vessel is due at W’elUngton about the middle of next week. THE PORT HUNTER. The C. and D. Line steamer Port Hunter left Gisborne last night for Waikokopti to proceed with her loading. She is to sail from the latter port on Friday for New Plymouth. PORT PTRIE SAILS TO-DAY. The C. and D. Line steamer Port Pirie ia to sail from Wellington* at 11 o’clock this morning for London, via Montevideo. THE CANADIAN BRITISHER. Tlie Canadian Britisher left Auckland at 4 p.m. yesterday for W’ellington. to continue discharge of her Montreal cargo. The vessel is due here on Saturday morning. From Wellington she will proceed to Lyttelton. Timaru. Dunedin. Napier, and back to Wellington, where she is dim on February 5. The Canadian Britisher will go from Wellington to Auckland, and is to clear the latter port on February 11 ; for New York, Boston and Halifax.

THE HERTFORD LOADING. At 10.20 yesterday morning tile Hertford arrived at Wellington from Lyttelton, and berthed at the King’s wharf to load. She will leave here on Saturday for Gisborne, Napier and Auckland to flh up for London and (lie West Coast of Great Britain. MARTABAN LEAVES AUCKLAND. In continuation of imr voyage from Now .York and Newport News, the <’. aud D. Line chartered steamer Martaban; left Auckland Oarly last evening for Wellington. ... The vessel is dim here to-morrow evening to continue discharge. THE CITY OF SHANGHAI. The A. and A. Line chartered steamer City of Shanghai arrived at Wanganui yesterday morning from New Plymouth to complete discharge of her New York cargo. The vessel will leave Wanganui ou Saturday for Sydney. TREKIEVE DUE SATURDAY. The New Zealand Shipping Co. advise that the Trekie'ye will leave Auckland early this morning for Wellington to continue discharge of her Montreal cargo The vessel is due here on Saturday. lONIC LEAVES COLON. Cable news has been received by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Co. that the ionic left Colon on Tuesday morning for Southampton and London, en route from Wellington. The vessel sailed from here on December 2(1. THE CANADIAN SPINNER. The Canadian Spinner arrived at Pa; nama at 8 a.m. on January 8 from Halifax and sailed again at 1 a.m. on January 9 for Auckland, Wellington. Lyttelton, Timaru, 'and Duncd.in. The vessel is due at Auckland on February 8 and at W’ellington a week' later. ' ‘ : LOADING AT GISBORNE. Gisborne is to. be included in Hie ports of discharge of the C. and D. Line steamer Port Curtis, which is to leave New York on March 7; The vessel will.discharge at Auckland, Gisborne, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She is due at Auckland about April 7. THE MAIMOA. Tim Shaw, Savill, and Albion Co.’s steamer Maimoa arrived at Gisborne at 7 a.m. yesterday from Tokomaru Bay. She will leave Gisborne to-day for Napier to continue loading. CARGO FROM LIVERPOOL. The Federal Co. have been notified by cable that the Huntingdon left Liverpool on January 9 with general cargo to discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff. The vessel is due at Auckland on February 16, and at Wellington a week later. MISCELLANEOUS. The Kaimai will sail from Wellington tomorrow for Grcymouth to load for this port. The Kairanga will leave Newcastle tomorrow for Wellington, and is due here on Thursday next. The Kaituna cleared Westport last night for W’ellington, and is due here to-morrow. The Kaponga is duo at W’ellington this morning from Newcastle. The Whangape left Portland last night for Wellington direct. The vessel is due hero on Saturday, and will sail for Lyttelton on' Monday. ’ The Ngakuia was due at W’esiport last night from W’ellington to load for Dunedin. The Katoa will leave Auckland on Monday for W’ellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Oamaru. and Timaru. The Wtoipahi will sail from Dunedin today for W’ellington. via Lyttelton.
