A start will be made this week at Wellington on the preparation of the Tulanekai for the laying of the new submarine telephone cable across Cook Strait. Captain Bollons proceeded to Auckland on Tuesday to take over the Hinemoa, which haa been lying there since the end of December. The crew of the Tutanekai left W’ellington yesterday for Auckland. The Hinemoa will be brought down to Wellington early next week, and will proceed from here on her circuit of the North Island lighthouses. THE MAKURA. The Makura, from San Francisco, left Rarotonga at 6.30 p.m. last Monday for Wellington. The vessel is due here on Monday next. THE PAKEHA . . The Federal Co.’s steamer Cambridge arrived at Auckland early last evening from Liverpool. The vessel is due at W’elUngton about the middle of next week. THE PORT HUNTER. The C. and D. Line steamer Port Hunter left Gisborne last night for Waikokopti to proceed with her loading. She is to sail from the latter port on Friday for New Plymouth. PORT PTRIE SAILS TO-DAY. The C. and D. Line steamer Port Pirie ia to sail from Wellington* at 11 o’clock this morning for London, via Montevideo. THE CANADIAN BRITISHER. Tlie Canadian Britisher left Auckland at 4 p.m. yesterday for W’ellington. to continue discharge of her Montreal cargo. The vessel is due here on Saturday morning. From Wellington she will proceed to Lyttelton. Timaru. Dunedin. Napier, and back to Wellington, where she is dim on February 5. The Canadian Britisher will go from Wellington to Auckland, and is to clear the latter port on February 11 ; for New York, Boston and Halifax.

The Federal Co. have been notified by cable that the Huntingdon left Liverpool on January 9 with general cargo to discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff. The vessel is due at Auckland on February 16, and at Wellington a week later. MISCELLANEOUS. The Kaimai will sail from Wellington tomorrow for Grcymouth to load for this port. The Kairanga will leave Newcastle tomorrow for Wellington, and is due here on Thursday next. The Kaituna cleared Westport last night for W’ellington, and is due here to-morrow.
