HOLIDAY RACING

NGATA WINS BIG RACE AT MANAWATU PALMERSTON NORTH STAKES WON BY MOTLEY CIRCULATION AND SET SAIL SCORE AT DUNEDIN The Manawatu meeting was continued yesterday when another excellent day’s sport was provided.. Ngata followed up his good showing on the first day by wmmng the big race, and Motley scored in the Palmerston North Stakes, - Tamatete who has a long string of victories m this event be- ■■ ing amongst those defeated. The St. Andrew s Handicap at Dunedin was won by Circulation and Set Sail won the ; Grandstand Handicap by the narrowest of margins.

MANAWATU MEETING

”NGATA WINS PRINCIPAL EVENT MOTLEY’S PALMERSTON STAKES HANDICAP WON BY MISS HUPANA

•(By Telegraph—From "The Watcher.") Palmerston North, December 28. Great racing was witnessed at Awapuni to-day on the second day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting, the finishes being extremely close .and exciting. Another large crowd /•attended, the weather being fine and sultrv. Ngata won the principal handicap in brilliant style from Olympic and Tanadees, and got a fine reception from the crowd. Motley won the Palmerston Stakps easily from Peneus and Tamatete, the* latter having won "..the race the four vears previously. In •the Awapuni Handicap an outsider in Miss Hupana came to light, Orchid being second and Shirley third. There was a sensational incident in this race, the favourite, Licinius, falling at the distance and throwing his rider, J. Barrv, in front of the galloping horses. Barry had a miraculous escape from serious injury, and got off with a severe bruising and shaking. Speculation was again brisk, the sum of £47,565 going through the machine, as against £37,718 for the second day twelve months ago, an increase of £9847. The club is having a most successful meeting from all points of view. KELVIN HANDICAP. Catcall was a solid favouritefor the Kelvin Handicap. Newbury King and Mangatoetoe being the best backed of the others. . Catcall ran a good race, and with a - little more luck in the running may have won. Road Hog was well placed throughout and being bandy to the leaders at the top of the straight came away to score decisively. Killoch, Matu, Mangatoetoe, Panart and Opa were all bunched at the finsh. The latter was a long

way back last till the concluding stages. Newbury King and Black Mint were the leaders to the straight, where they failed to run on. Killoch got a bad passage HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. In level betting between Novar, Santiago, Highway and Crishna they finished up on the machine in thar order. Crishna pulled hard in front all the way and just failed to finish. Santiago appeared on the scene three ■ furlongs from home and scored cleverly from the fast finishing Kilorum. They went too fast for Highway with his big weight. Novar was very dis- . appointing and the others were not . prominent. HIGHDEN HANDICAP. Minotus was heavily backed for the hack sprint and he ran a good race, being unlpcky not to get second. . Mime improved on his Woodville form and was always prominent. Bright Knight scored decisively and is a useful hack. Sleet found her burden too much. Joy Bird ran a fair race.

' PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. Enthusiasm and Ngata monopolised the betting in the President’s Handicap, Tresham and Imperial Spark being the best backed of the others. En..thnsiasm ran a very bad race, being in the rear almost from the start. She looked well enough. Ngata ran a great race and scored a narrow win from the lightlv weighted Olympic, who raced tin to’form in the Cup. Ngata’s victory was' cheered by the crowd. Tanadees ran a remarkably good race, being well up all the way, which indicated that the interference he met with in the Cup affected his chances. He was paying a ven' long price, even for second place, .which he only just lost. Imperial Spark has made a good recovery from his recent injuries, and he ran a very creditable race. He was with the challengers at the distance, but the last bit found him out and he was fourth. Royal Diadem ran a remarkably good race for over a mile, and inside the distance

of to-day’s event he looks a likely winner very soon. Good Sport was prominent till the home turn, where he faded out, and the others were never dangerous. PALMERSTON STAKES. Motley was favourite for the Stakes, in which only four started. She won going away by two lengths, which could have been extended. Peneus lasted better than Tamatete for second money, although he covered a lot of extra ground. Piquant was outclassed, although she went with them for 4J furlongs. Motley’s success was the first enjoyed by her owner breeder in this event. Her time equals the best for the race held by Bo Peep and Acre. TERRACE WELTER HANDICAP. Kilbronsyth was a firm favourite for the Terrace Welter Handicap, with all the rest of the top-weights well backed. The favourite was in a very bad. position on the turn, but he put in an irresistible run from the top of the straight. His performance was quite out of the ordinary and stamps him as a most promising gelding. Nine of Spades essayed to win all the way, and only just failed. Polar was again prominent till the straight, and Blue Peter ran creditably. The Tank is improving with every race. Anklet and Asleep ran fairly well. Joyeuse showed good early speed, but faded out once the straight was reached. HIMATANGI HANDICAP. Degage was a warm favourite, .with Agitato solidly supported, in the Hima- Z tangi Handicap, and good money went on Bright Day. The latter was in front over the last furlong, and had a commanding lead at the distance, but he only just got home from Degage, who should have won but for interference at the home turn. She put in a remarkable run home. Rouex seems to be an inconsistent performer. He was not prominent early, but was disputing a place all the way to the straight. Ring Potoa and Fillette ran fair races, but Agitato did not run up as expected. Zero Hour ran an improved race. AWAPUNI HANDICAP. Licinius, Shirley, Ilka, and Orchid were the only runners well backed for the open sprint, which produced . a great surprise, the lightly-weighted Miss Hupana scoring cleverly and paying a substantial price. The favourtie was well placed throughout, and was handy at the distance, where he caused a sensation by falling. He would no doubt ■ have had something to say in the finish had he stood up. Orchid ran a good race, and had he been able to get through earlier he might have squeezed home first. Ilka ran better to-day, and so did Megalo. Heisler again faded out over the final stages. Shirley did not get a very good passage in the middle stages, and she ran well. Miss Egypt was again finishing very fast from a very bad position early, and Master O’Rourke was also slow away. Misgovern got left and tailed the field. DETAILS OF THE RACING KELVIN HANDICAP, of 200 sovs. One mile and 110 yards. 8 Mr. James MacDonald’s br. g. Road Hog, by Heather MixtureScorch, aged, 7.8 (A.
