PETONE CARNIVAL

SATURDAY’S GATHERING

RESULTS OF REGATTA y

The Petone Carnival, which ia being, held under the auspices of the Petone, Beautifying Society for the purpose of raising funds to improve the beach,, opened on Saturday morning in the presence of a largo crowd of holiday- 1 makers. At 10 o’clock’ proceedings commenced with a big procession through the main streets to the accompaniment of music played by the' New Municipal and Silver Bands. Ever, a hundred children paraded in fancy dress, while several firms 'provided van-, ous displays of local interest. The t.wo fire engines belonging to the Lower Hutt and Petone Boroughs motored slowIv along, and the Petone and Lower ; Hutt Gas Board gave demonstrations of the various uses of gas. The'-car- ' nival held on the beach provided quite a number of novel attractions. Apart from many sideshows, merry-go-rounds, ocean wave, swing-boats, etc., there was the Petone Rowing Club’s Regatta, which proved a great success. During $0 afternoon thousands of people moved about tho beach, and over 509 motor-cars from the city went out to the gala. Perhaps the most attractive novelty of the whole carnival was that provided by the Staig Sisters, who perform in a cage known as tho “globe of death.” These two girts race at over 60 miles per hour on powerful motor bikes around the high ceiling ot the cage, looping the loop and doing the most amazing and hair-raising stunts. , ~ At night the beach was brilliantly illuminated by over two thousand electric lights, which blazed in colours of red, white, blue and yellow for miles around) Judging by the crowds the carnival, which will be continued throughout the week, should be a great success. During the evening a dance was held in the hall on the beach, over two hundred couples taking part. Following are the prize-winners in the fancy dress costume parade:—Fancycostume; Boys, W.
