MURDER OF MELBOURNE CONSTABLE

Alelbourne, December 26.

Constable Clare, who wa§ fatally injured at North Alelbourne, was stabbed to the heart in front of crowds ol Christmas shoppers. Clare was ofl duty and in plain clothes when, he met two other plain-clothcs men. The party saw a number of Italians quarrelling, and as Clare passed one of the Italians bumped into him, and before he could defend himself he was knocked down. While on the ground several Italians struck at him. Othei police came to their assistance, and a large crowd gathered, but did not help the police. While Clare was lying cm the ground an Italian was seen to draw a knife and stab the constable to the heart. Polite and civilians chased the murderer, who onlv stopped aftfr a revolver shot had been fired at him. Clare was found to be dead on arrival at the hospital.—Press Assn.
