THE RACING WORLD

WINTON MEETING NOTES AND COMMENTS

For her win in the Ashhurst Cup Waetea has been rehandicapped at 9st. 61b. in the Levin Cup. and thus meets Imperial Spark on Gib. worse terms than she did at Ashhurst. Imperial Spark mav improve on his race at Ashhurst, "but -Ur. Ballinger’s game little mare won with something ?n hand and should he capable of again finishing in front on Saturday.

Judging by the way Axle finished at Ashhurst the extra 101 b he is asked to carry at Levin should not unduly Stop him. However, the top weights may give him trouble on Saturday. A southern sportsman was negotiating for Footfall during race week but the price asked for the Autumnus-M arstep gelding was considered to higl, and no business resulted MeriyDaj was also being sought after by a „ D 'V I " edin man, but, states the bun, the opinions of the seller and the buyei regarding the price were so much at variance that the mare will still race in B. Burgess’s interests.

On his Trentham running Sir Pam should be in the limelight soon. Lucinette has finished her racing career, and has been turned out. She is to join the matrons iiaddock next season.

Solfello was! sold at the conclusion of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s fixture. He is to be spelled for a month or two. When ho next resumes training it will bo under R. Longley’s supervision.

Bv winning the Canterbury Cup, The Banker followed the lead established by Manton, Traillour, Euroclydon, Lady Zetland. Seashore, Noctuiform, and ViceAdmiral, who all won the New Zealand and Canterbury Cups in the skins season. . Spoony was favoured with a beautiful run in the Waikato Cup, and was always in a good position on the fence. This was an undoubted factor in his success, and helped him to register his most important victory to date. Spoony hung on gamely at the finish, and, says “Archer,” may be seen to further advantage over a distance, as he stays rather well, and is probably improving.

Tho meeting of Commendation and Lysandcr in the Great Northern Foal Stakes at Ellerslie next month is already arousing a good deal of interest. Sb 'far Commendation has not been extended, but there are those who were so much impressed with the way Ly. sander cleaned up the field at Ellerslie last week that they expect the Absurd horse to give Commendation a real race when they meet. It was with a fine finishing run that Polonett reached second place in the Waikato Cup, and he was a trifle unluckv not to win (writes “Archer” in the "Herald”). During the early stages of the race he was badly placed, and there were still seven horses in front of him when the last four furlongs were entered upon. Tn addition he had to come on the outside, and altogether his performance was a pleasing one. Polonett should win a good handicap soon. W. Holmes is handling at Riccarton a two-year-old filly by Greyspear from Claronilla, a sister to Boadicea. She is small, but shows quality and should be useful later on. Peter Maxwell was sent out favourite ror the Waimai Hurdles at Waikato on tho first day and finished well back, but on the” second day he accounted' for the Matangi Hurdles. His running formed the subject of an inquiry, but it was decided to take no action. As Peter Maxwell met Pendennis on 121 b. and West Abbey on 41b. better terms over a longer journey on the second dav the stewards/comments “Archer”) were probably justified in deciding as they did.

The Winkie filly Raweno was again unsound after racing at Riccarton last week. She will probably be sent to the stud next season.

The Mountain Knight mare Whariti has been sold by the Gisborne trainer, J. Griffiths, and she has gone into F. P. Claridge’s stable at Riccarton. It is nineteen years since a Taranaki horse won the New Zealand Cup, Mr. R. Shore’s Star Rose scoring in 1906. It will bo remembered (writes “Mascot” in the “Sun”) that this horse, coupled with Captain Shannon, winner of the Stewards’ Handicap, paid a sensational dividend of over £2OOO on the double totalisator then in vogue. In 1902 Halberdier; belonging to Mr. B. T. Bennett, of Patea. was also successful, and in 1897 the late Mr. S. McGuinness won with Waiuku. The Banker’s, therefore, is the fourth NewZealand Cup to go to Taranaki. Sportsmen from that quarter have a. good record in connection with the Mitchelson Cup. that handsome trophy having gone to Taranaki on five out of the eight occasions on which it has been raced for. For four successive years Taranaki horses—Depredation, Volo, Stork and Income —were successful, and now after a lapse of two years Te Monanui notches victory. To Kara is reported to be still showing unmistakable signs of unsoundness and will not be a runner in any of the big summer events.

Malaga’s form at the recent meeting at Riccarton was disappointing, and his trainer, F. D. Jones, has decided to try him as a jumper. The other morning, states the “Press,” he was put into the schooling ring,. and he performed well enough to be tried later in the week with a rider up. A. Peart is mentioned as his probable pilot when the serious business commences.

The Harp is a recent addition to J. B. Pearson’s team at Riccarton. The gelding is reported to be light in condition at present, but should be forward enough to take part at some of the Christmas meetings. Tamatete, it is reported, wjH make his first public appearance thigjseason in tho Feilding Stakes, fivo furlongs. During the four days’ racing at Riccarton, Rapine, the winner of ■ the Metropolitan Handicap, was the only first favourite to win a handicap event. Mr. G. D. Greenwood may have a couple of representatives racing at the Feilding meeting at the end of this month. Haze figures in the principal handicap eadh dav. while Nincompoop is engaged in the Feilding Stakes. Haze must have a chance on his best form, but Nincompo.op’s Riccarton efforts (states the "Lyttelton Times”) will have to be improved on to enable him to win if the opposition is at all strong. The Trentham owner-trainer, H. B. Lorrigan, has decided to remain at Riccarton until next week, when, he will take Orchid and Eonroark to Wasbdyke for the South Canterbuijy meeting; A. McAulay is keeping Tarleton and Sun Up in steady work. They are not engaged at the South Canterbury meeting, but probably both of them will he racing at the Methven fixture io be held at Riccarton a week later. Joy .Kin£, the two-year-old brother to Mimetic, is making a good recovery from tho trouble which put him out of action at Riccarton, and it is statei’ that he will be seen again in public in the near future. Archeen, who made his reappearance at the Waikato meeting on Monday, was left at tho post, and finished well back. Surveyor is stated to bo an unlikely starter at the Takapuna meeting. A northern writer states that Finelli’s next appearance will be at the Auckland Christmas meeting. The Waipa Racing Club has accepted a tender for improvements to the grandstand, and also the provision of a stewards’ stand. Ju view of this decision the secretary was instructed to apply to the Minister of Finance for a refund of £250, being 1J- per cant, of the gross takings of the totnlisator, which is provided for in the Finance Act, 1925, where clubs make permanent improvements.
