The Education Board has accepted the tender of Mr. Ilickmott for the concrete work required for a retaining wall and shelter shed at ihe Kelburn Normal School. The rest of tho work is to be done by the board’s staff. An amusing interlude between the Magistrate and a count: v vouth, prosecuted for the breach of a hv-law, disturbed the general solemnity of the proceedings at the Invercargill Police Court on a recent morning (states the “Southland Times”). “Do you work?” asked the Magistrate. “Yes,” replied the youth gruffly. “How much do vou get a week?” queried the Magistrate “A quid,” was' the abrupt answer. “Right, fined half a quid,” retorted the Magistrate, amidst, hcartv laughter from the whole Court.'
