TWO AUCKLAND BURGLARIES
OLD CLOTHES EXCHANGED FOR NEW 7 *<. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, November 18. The premises of George Tutt, outfitter and mercer, in Symonds Street, were broken into between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning, and wearing apparel valued at £3O was stolen. Entrance was made by a window at the back of the premises. The intruder, before leaving, dressed himself in a new suit of clothes and left his old garments in the shop. The burglary was reported to the police on Monday and a man was arrested by Detective McWhirter in connection with the affair. All the stolen property was recovered. Another case of breaking and entering presenting somewhat similar features occurred at the premises of R. J. and J. O. Sims, merchants, in Anzac Avenue, where tobacco and cigarettes valued at £lO were stolen. In this instance the intruder left his,, coat on the premises and« appropriated a better one which was hanging in the warehouse. A man wearing the coat alleged to have been stolen and a vest that matched with the coat left on the premises has been arrested by Detective Moon.
CAPTURED AFTER LONG CHASE. I ! Auckland, Noveniber 18. William Andrew Somerville, aged 28, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court with having attempted to break and enter a shop in Freeman’s Bay with intent to commit a crime, and was remanded till November 26. The accused was captured, after a long chase, by a man in pyjamas and a constable who joined in. Somerville, it is alleged, had a saw in his hand, and it was afterwards discovered that an attempt had been made to saw out the lock on the door of McLaren’s butcher’s shop.
