THE WINTER SHOW

SURPLUS OF £2600 The second annual'report of the Wellington Show Association refers to the success of the 1925 show, which . was held, in conjunction with the Dominion Industrial Exhibition, in the Pipitea Shed from Julv 30 to August 15 last,“The Motor Traders’ Association did not participate this year to any extent,” states the report, “but it is hoped that in future years it will lie possible to interest them again in the project. The generosity of the Harbour Board in making available to us the fine new Pipitea wharf shed was a prime factor in the success of the show, the building being particularly suitable for the purpose.” The entries in the live stock section, it is stated, showed a substantial increase over those of last year. The expense of conducting a live stock show was necessarily great, but the committee hoped, in the course of time, to build up that department of activity to a considerably increased extent. The sheep dog trials at the Basin Reserve were well attended, but the horse-jumping events were cancelled as the council declined to allow the use of a suitable ground. There was a decrease in the receipts by way of subscriptions, but during the coming year an energetic canvass would be made.

The committee recorded its full appreciation of those who had assisted in providing entertainment at the show Messrs. Kirkcaldie and Staines, the Boys’ Institute, Caledonian Society, and Lower Hutt Bands, and, by courtesy of the Admiral of the American Fleet, the band of U.S.S. Pennsylvania, Miss Gwen Gibbs, and Messrs. J. Knowsley and J. Boyd and their pupils. Special appreciation is expressed of the work done by Mr. G. Mitchell, as secretary of the association, in building up the organisation up to tlie time he resigned. Thanks for valuable services rendered are also accorded to Mr. G. Lauchlan, assistant general manager of tlie City Corporation Lighting Department; the engineer and officers of the Harbour Board; the manager and officers of the Corporation Tramway Department, who provided a regular and efficient service between points of the city and the show; Mr. Kennedy, general manager, and Mr. Taylor, engineer, of the Wellington Gas Company, Ltd.; the superintendent of the Central Fire Brigade; Mr. Goyder, Happy Valley station; Messrs. Minimax, Ltd.; the Wellington Meat Export Co., Ltd.; Mr. Howard Booth and Mr. L.».Sinart, of Carterton; Mr. T. Webb, of Palmerston North; the Ladies’ Committee and voluntary assistants, the Press, and judges of the various sections. The financial statement showed that the surplus from the year's activities was £2639 4s. 10d., and that sum brought the accumulated funds of the association to £4259 2s. 2d. The assets are shown at £4376 17*.
