BUMPED FORE AND AFT
SCOW’S ECCENTRIC MOVEMENTS
The eccentric movements of the scow Kowhai attracted some attention from the Queen’s Wharf at mid-day yesterday. The scow was being moved out from berth No. 13 in order to proceed to the breastwork at Thorndon, but instead of backing out stern first into the open prior to turning the officer in charge considered it advisable to turn whilst still within the confined waters between the two inner tees of the wharf. He slewed the stern half round and went full astern, with the result that the scow’s launch, which hung over the stern, was crushed like a concertina between the after bulwarks and the hull of the steamer Gale. Then the engines were reversed and the Kowhai went swiftly ahead until the stay of the bowsprit came into collision with the wharf near the ten-ton crane on Jervois Quay, with the result that the spar broke off short. After this the scow backed away from the quay, and, making a wide sweep, eventually made her way to the other end of Lambton. Harbour.
