BOWLS

(By

“No. 3.”)

TOURNAMENT SEASON APPROACHES.

Few bowlers who take a real interest in the game and its administration will disagree with the existing policy of the Wellington Bowling Centre in playing club matches and inter-club matches on alternate Saturdays. Under the old order when- inter-club matches were arranged for any Saturday there was always an underlying grievance on the part of members, who without knowing anything about it would arrive on the green at 2 o’clock to End half the best rinks reserved for inter-club games whilst the rest were already occupied by the early birds, who may or may not have had some inkling of the day’s programme. That sort of thing has been, happily, done away with, and members know that for the one Saturday the green is reserved wholly and solely torclub members whilst the following Saturday certain rinks are reserved for Pennant and inter-dub friendly games. The tournament season is now rapiuly approaching, and there is a good deal of talk on all grens of rink forming, mostly, of course, in Wellington, for the. Centre’s tournament commencing on Boxing Day, and for the Dominion Tournament at Dunedin in January, though, here and there, bowlers have been heard speaking of trying their hick during the holidays at other tournaments in the provincial centres. For example, the Wairarapa tournament is generally popular with certain bowlers, because it is close at hand,-and, taking place on aJnuary 1 and 2, it does not interfere with the Wellington Centre’s fixture. Indeed a rink could play through the Centre’s tournament and even in the post section play, and still be in time to play at Masterton on the Friday morning. Entries for the Wairarapa tournament will close on December 29. . Another tournament is to be held at Woodville on the same dates—January 1 and —unuer the title of the Ruahine tournament, for which entries will close on December 28. The Wanganui Centre's tournament will- not commence until Monday, December 28. Three days’ rink play is guaranteed, and the finale will be played on the two-life system. Entries for this tournament wjll close on De-, cember 12. It should be noted by local bowlers that entries for the Wellington Centre s tournament close on December 12. At Gisborne the Peace Shield tournament will be played on January 1 and 2, entries to close on December 23. There are no more popular fixtures during the bowling season than the two tournaments that are held annually at’Rotorua. This charming resort offers an entirely different atmosphere from any other town or city in the Dominion. It is far away from the busy work-a-day world, and its ceaseless worries and anxieties, and the sunny days in the heart of the beautiful gardens, the luxury of the restorative baths, the impromptu concerts and dances, which the bowlers know so well how to arrange, makes the outing a thoroughly delightful, and by no means, expensive, holiday. Such is the rush of entries for these tournaments that for some years past the Rotorua Club has had t rrngo two tournaments, owing tot the number that were unable to get into the firsL ibis season the tournaments at Rotorua will commence on February 8 and February 22; and the entries will close on January 23 and February 6 respectively. Alredy several rinks of Wellington players have been formed to take part in the first tournament. The secretary of the Wellington Bowling Club has been advised that tour rinks from the Carlton Club propose to leave Auckland for Wellington on December 6 to play th© I°cal parent club for the Thompson Shield, which, it may be remembered, was retailed by Carlton; when the first contest tor the shield was played on the. Carlton green last season. The visitors will spend at least one full day on the Wellington green in connection with the shield cotest, but as they' vnll probably have three full days in this city they will visit other greens as well.
