“SPORTS DAY"

WELLINGTON COLLEGE EVENTS A SUCCESSFUL MEETING SEVERAL RECORDS BROKEN / ’ Ideal conditions prevailed for W25 “Sports Day” at Wellington College. The track was in first-class order, and in the afternoon the youthful athletes displayed their prowess before a large and keenly interested gathering or patents,' friends and old boys. It is evident from the really good performances put up throughout the day that the old college is niaintaining its prestige in amateur athletics and that it still continues to produce, embryo “Goodbeheres” and “Jenkinses aplenty. ~ , , The old boys’ race provided rare fun and the track could scarcely accommodate all the competitors, so much so indeed that the judges’ verdict was announced in stentorian tones as follows: “Telford, first; Corkhill, second; Childs, Innes, Shotlander, and the greater part of the field third.” Amongst those present were Mr. J. P. Firth, C.M.G., and Mrs. Firth. Before the presentation of prizes took place the headmaster of the school, Mr. T. R. Creswell, expressed regret that the two postponements which had been made necessary by the inclement weather had occasioned the absence of many who had intended attending. Amongst these was Mr. Barber, chairman of the Board of Governors, who had come down from Palmerston North last week, not knowing of the postponement. The prizes were then presented by Mrs. Creswell. During the afternoon very much appreciated refreshments were served in the West. School, where the college orchestra under Master F. Martinelli played popular music. On the grounds the Artillery Band contributed acceptable items. The Broken Records. In the third heat of the 100yds. scratch under 14 years, A. F. Chorlton won in the- good time of 12 l-ssec., breaking J. Heinemann’s record, established last year, by four-fifths of a second. Another young runner, H. Avery, set a fresh record for the 100yds. scratch, under 15 years, which he did in 11 l-ssec. The previous best time for this event was 11 3-ssec., put up by F. K. Styles in 1923. Avery also equalled J. Wilson’s 1923 record of 26 4-ssec., for the 220yds. handicap (under 15). J. W. Doyland registered good time in the first heat of the 220yds. handicap, under 16 years, winning the event from scratch in 25 2-ssec., which is one-fifth slower than the record for the distance, made by C. H. Jenkins in 1920. In the half-mile handicap open, A. E. Burd, a very promising young distance runner, whose time was 2min. 11 4-ssec., beat G. P. Rayward’s record of 2min. 12 2-ssec„ put up in 1916. J. C. Hardio cut out the 410yds. handicap, under 16, in 58 l-ssec.. beating W. R. Parkinson’s record of 58 2-ssec., which has stood since 1900. In the aross country run. (senior), which took place on October 7, O. B. Roberts’s time was 17min. 15 2-ssec.. beating G. P. Rayward’s record of 17min. 36sec., put up in 1916. ,
