CHAMPIONSHIP POSITIONS. Senior A Division.

CHATHAM CUP FINAL Y.M.C.A. VICTORIOUS. Despite the heavy ground the game between Y.M.C.A. and Scottish Wanderers for Chatham Cup representation was fast and keenly contested. It could not, however, be described as the best of which cither team was capable. Incidents which might have turned the tables developed from clever play by the Scottish Wanderers’ forwards, but Y.M.C.A.’s lines of defence rose up like a stone wall in front of the assaults. The midfield play of trSfr Wanderers’ vanguard was generally superior to that of the Y.M.C.A. front-rankers. Wanderers’ reputation for sound and stubborn defence was not since it was in this department that their greatest weakness was apparent. They were averse to going forward to meet an opponent. and by the time the clash came the ball had been safely transferred to another Y.M.C.A. player. Tho Scottish Wanderers’ backs and halves when clearing their lines, put too much boot into their kicks, and this had the effect of placing the ball to the feet of McGirr or Prince, and making tho task. of their forwards tho more difficult. Twice openings to score were presented to Wanderers’ right-wing, but neither Mong nor Houston could rise to the occasions. McGirr was the outstanding figure of the contest.. Cunningham, Scottish Wanderers’ outside left, secured tho honours among the forwards, and had he received more of the ball in tho. second half, there might have been different results. Y.M.C.A. possessed the best all-round combination and deserved the victory. Campbell won the toss, and the ball was set moving in the biggest club event of the season. The next moment a passage-at-arms occurred between Mong and.McGirr. and tho ball went into touch. Within tho next two minutes Kirkland was beaten, and Y.M.C.A. were one up. Tho goal came with dramatic suddenness, and was due to the mis-tim-ing of Montgomery, the Wanderers’ left back. Lothian had just transferred the ball to the wing when McGirr got possession and dropped it at Campbell’s feet. Tho latter quickly got rid of it. Montgomery had time to clear, but Dempster was on' him. and in a twinkling the ball was in the net. I—o. Ballard and Campbell figured in a movement in front of the Wanderers’ goal. The former got the best of .Tack,, and, swinging in towards goal, let drive. Kirkland stopped tho ball, but threw it only a few feet away, when a tussle between tho Y.M.C.A. forwards and tho defending backs ensued. Campbell got the leather out. but. sent it over th? bar, giving tho defenders welcome relief. Wanderers returned to tho attack, and Mong threw away an advantage by putting two corners b-hind. Tho Scots wore determined to score, but. either their backs or halves kicked too hard upfield for the forwards to got possession, and the spell ended without further addition to tho score. The Scots’ defence, which had from tho start boon rather shaky, gave no signs of improving in the second spoil. There wns also a disinclination on the part of T ogie and Arbuthnott to meet the attacking forwards. It was a close call for Wanderers’ goal when Campbell met a centre from Ballard with his knee. Kirkland saved well and punted out to the left wing, Cunnigham and Galbraith made an effort to break down the defence, but Atkinson, who had plowed a good breaking up game, brought the wingers to a halt. One or two fine combined movements wore made by the Scots’ forwards. Tho attempts to score were frustrated. Tt was evident, now that Y.M.C.A. had tho measure of their opponents. The Y.M.C.A. forwards swept down on Kirkland. but Dempster’s shot went wide. Y.M.C.A.’s right wing returned and a shot from that, quarter hit the crossbar and dropped in front of goal. Kirkland managed to scoop it to the other side of the goal, where Ballard, who was unmarked slipped the ball into the net, Y.M.C.A. 2, Scottish Wanderers 0. The Scots rallied and had Y.M. C.A. in one or two tight corners. The defence, however, was not to he penetrated. and Y.M.C.A. left the field victors for tlie second time in a Chatham Cup final it> Wellington. Mr. G. Goffin carried the whistle. CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES' MAR IST (8) V. DIAMONDS (1). Beginning their game gainst Marist with nine men. Diamonds were soon put on their defence, and it was not long before McKlligott sent one post I learn-. Newport and a young fourth- > rlaxs goalkeeper joined up soon afterwards, and Diamonds made several de- ‘ tenntned. attacks, Hickey bein« tested

unsuccessfullv. J. McLeod and Rudolph collided and the former had to leave the field with a cut on tlm' forehead. Buirkc dropped a long shot right in goal and Barton, with a nice run down the wing, drove the third goal home. Diamonds retaliated ami from a pass by Da.niels, Stocks put one past Hickey, 3 —l. In the second session Diamonds were hard put to it to keep the score down. Barton scored the fourth goal for Marist. and then McElligott ran through, making no mistake. Barton scored again and then Costello found the net on two occasions. Diamonds had dene their dash while battling against unequal odds, and it was only through the good sportsmanship of' the Marist team that more goals were not registered, tho game ending B—l8 —1 in their favour. Mr. A. E. Wells refereed.

HOSPITAL (5) V. WATERSIDERS (1). Hospital defeated Watersiders on the Hospital ground by 5 goals to 1. The home team got moving and Moore, in attempting to effect a clearance, let the leather curl off his foot into goal. Cox made a great effort, but the ball got 'between his fingers and the post, I—A. From the kick-off Stanbridge came through and a pass to O'Donnell saw the latter robbed by Gibb. Hospital forwards peppered Cox with shots, and he kept them out until at last Philips got clean through and gave him no chance, 2—o. O’Donnell and Proudfoot were associated in a clever bit of work, but Thompson put an end to it, and sent his forwards away. Hughes shot and Dwyer diverted the ball for a corner, which Dick placed for Gilbertson, who headed the ball in, 3—o. After resumption Watersiders held their own and on quite a few occasions came very close to scoring. Hospital’s goal had some narrow escapes and seemed to bear a charmed life. Hospital attacked again, and Lambert, in trying to get through, forced a corner off Dwyer, Tt was placed well and. Hughes headed the leather into goal, 4—o. Watersiders still struggled on, and Cox in going out to ward off an attack was penalised for carrying the ball. Simon took the kick and the 'ball was shot home, s—o. The perseverance of the losers was at last rewarded. Stanbridge raced past Gibb and Ferguson gave Souter no chance, s—l. Watersiders made desperate endeavours to reduce the leeway, but the game ended without further score. THISTLE (6) V. INSTITUTE (2). Institute kicked off at Association Park against Thistle, with tho sun in their eyes. Ten minutes later Wetherspoon, from a centre by Bramlcy, goaled. From a scramble near goal, Bramley the next score. Hunter secured the third goal from some, excellent forward play, and just before, half-time Wetherspoon headed the ball into goal from a corner, making the, total 4—o. A quarter of an hour later Hunter scored with a hot shot. Institute then took a turn and Gilligan mads an opening for Grenfield ing touch on, 5—2. A few minutes besure up and Gilligan again made an opening for Elford, who put tho finishing touch on, 5—2. A few minutes before time. Wctlierspoon ’Kicked tho ball over his own head into goal, and the game ended 6—2 in Thistle’s favour. Mr. 15. Martin refereed. SENIOR B DIVISION Y.M.C.A. C (I) V. DIAMONDS (0). Y.M.C.A. and Diamonds did not field their best teams at Kelburn . Park. Y.M.C.A:. wore without the services of Ewing, and Diamonds mustered only ten players, including two substitutes. In the first half Y.M.C.A.’s goalie had to handle th;-ball only once, tho play being entirely in Diamonds’ half. Half-an-hour after the game started Y.M.C.A. opened flieir account. Stark taking the ball down the lino and goaling. Tn the second spell, "Worth goaled, and this was followed by Banks finding the net. "Wilkins closed the account by following his example, the game ending 4—o in favour of Y.M.C.A. Diamonds played a determined game right to the whistle, and frequently puzzled their opponents by their one-back game. Mr. C. Kelly refereed.

SEATOUN (4) JOHNSONVILLE (2). The Seatoun-Johnsonville'fixture, played as a curtain-raiser, to the Chatham Cup final at tho Reserve ended in Seatoun defeating Johnsonville by 4 goals to 2. At half-tiihs the score was 3 —2 in Seatoun’s favour, Kinder having scored twice and McKenzie onco, and Moore and another player scored for Johnsonville. The second half was sternly contested by Johnsonville, but IJ ie .Y could not score. The game ended: Seatoun, 4; Johnsonville, 2. Mr. E. Ormrod was tho referee. Second A Division. Sydney, July IS. .In the fourth Soccer Test at the Agricultural Ground, England defeated Australia by 5 goals to nil. Fifteen thousand spectators watched the game. Tho score was four goals to nil at the interval, and could have befcn doubled before the second spell finished, but the Englishmen simply amused themselves with aimless play in that term. Within a quarter of an hour of tho commencement of tho first half three goals wore on tho board, Simms and Batten (2) being tho scorers. Just prior to the interval Storey and Harris endeavoured to sandwich the inside-left Hikes, but the last-named ran round them, and raised tho roof of the net with a piledriver. Cartwright was powerless against all four shots.

After tho interval tho Englishmen’s chief difficulty seemed to be to dodge scoring', but tho crowd commenced to taunt the visitors for not trying. Dikes danced round man after man. and invariably completed bis effort bv turning his back on tho goal. The Australians were outclassed by more skilful players. Simms scored England's next and final goal. Lambert, of Newcastle, who played centre-half for Australia, was a failure. I'.lkes. Ji.itlen. and Simms were always in Iho jiieture, while Spencer at all times had the mensuro of Masters.— PrMB Agsu.
