ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

CHATHAM CUP SEMI FINALS

Y.M.C.A BEAT THISTLE

HOSPITAL BEATEN BY SCOTTISH WANDERERS

The grounds were in a deplorable state for Association football on Saturday and slight drizzly rain during the afternoon did not improve matters. There was little wind but most matches were played in quagmires. In the semi-finals to select the Wellington defenders for the Chatham Cup Scottish Wanderers defeated Hospital; and Y.M.C.A.’s victory over Thistle left the two winners to play off for the honour. Marist had a good win from Institute, and Diamonds defeated Watersiders in the championship fixtures.

ENGLAND WINS SECOND TEST AUSTRALIA BEATEN BY 2 GOALS TO 1. (Rec. July 5, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, July 4. Twenty thousand spectators witnessed a keen struggle in tho second 'Test between the English and Australian Soccer teams, in fine cool weather. The Australian team was considerably strengthened by the infusion of frosh blood, while tho visitors were showing signs of staleness through their constant travelling. The first session ended with honours easy. 1 goal each, an achievement for the local team which spurred it to capital efforts in t.he seeond half. Smith opened England’s account before the interval, Simms equalising from a- hard drive by Bourke immediately after. Neither side took chances in ths second half, the game resolving itself into a hard stubborn test, with the visiting backs sometimes uncertain. Tiltprospect of caging tho Linn embnldcned the Kangarnn, until Elkos put Eng. land ahead, after Spencer had handled. The margin truly reflects the play, as the visitors, despite their lithe and speedy opponents, at all times executed their movements with the polish of artists. Curiously enough, the local players, though lacking the finishing touches, employed with advantage the tricks already gleaned from the visitors during the tour. The receipts to date amount to Am.
