THE CHAFFINCH
{His note is always “pink”!] Under my window every day The chaffinch calls in his eager way, “Pink! Pink! Pinkity-pink! What do you think? Pink! Pink!" I put out my head and I asked him why, He didn't sing of the deep blue sky; * He tossed his head, And cheekily said “Pink! Pink! That’s what I think!" “Well, sing," I begged, “of daffodils yellow, Or trees a-greening, you cheeky fellow!” He gave me a wink, But answered, ‘‘Pink! What do you think! Pinkity-pink!” —E. 8., in the “Morning Post.”
