CITY MILK SUPPLY

Sir,—As a visitor to your city .I have been particularly pleased, to notice the high quality article that is being sup plied by the council. lam quite sure there is no other supply in New Zealand to equal it both as to quality and value for cost. I have no knowledge of the merits of the dispute between the suburban farmers and the council, but was struck by . the fallacy of the argument used by the suburban farmers’ officers in your interview appearing in this morning's paper. They quote Dr. C. J. Reakes’ letter of July 30, 1924, concerning negative tests for tubercular bacilli, and consider this proves there is no . tuberculosis amongst their herds. This is a most fallacious argument. It is possible to have diseased animals in a herd, producing tubercular infected milk, dangerous to the public health, and yet get negative results from a test of the milk from the herd. The best safeguard is the tuberculin test of the cows. The city is to be congratulated, and should be assisted in every way in its endeavours for a better milk supply. It should be given the same powers regarding milk as meat, and no milk should be allowed to be sold in its area which does not pass through its depots and be subject to the same rules and regulations. The health of the community is of more importance than the wealth of a few individuals.— I am, etc., J. LONGTON. June 15.
