/“A GREAT IMPERIALIST” PREMIER AND COUNTRY’S welfare. By TiiLEGßAr.il.— Press AssociationInvercargill, May 1. Replying to expressions of sympathy, the Hon. J. G. Coates stated this afternoon that Mr. Massey’s condition was far from satisfactory, and that the Prime Minister was much weaker. Mr. Massey had a broad mind and a big heart, and put New Zealand first all the time. He appreciated their references to the Prime Minister as “Thrice a Britisher and a great Imperialist,” and would convey to Mrs. Massey their expressions of sympathy. The “New Zealand Herald,” commenting on the announcement of the surplus, says: “That the present statement of a further achievement of his administration does not come from Mr. Massey himself gives tragic emphasis to the knowledge that in serving the country Mr. Massey has not spared himself.” At the annual meeting of the Carterton Municipal Silver Band a vote of sympathy was passed with the Hon. Mr. Massey and his relatives in the former’s severe illness. Reference to the Prime Minister’s illness w.as made bv Mr. A. W. Rodger at the opening of the Southland Electric Power Board station at Monowai. He said that the sympathy of all was with Mr. Massey during this critical period.
