THE RACING WORLD

OAMARU MEETING

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Watcher.’’) Mountain Lion earned a 71b. penalty for the Thompson Handicap when lie won the Wainia'te Cup last week, and his weight in the big mile will now be Bst. 91b.

By winning at the Rangitikei meeting, Archeen has incurred a 71b. penalty in each of his engagements on Thursday. In the Silverstream Handicap his weight will now be Bst. olb. and in the Tinakori Handicap Bst. 41b. Imperial Spark will be ridden in the Thompson Handicap by L. A. Pine, who also rides Hall ISlarlc, Star Shell, Star Area and The Tank. Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay sportsmen consider Koodoo well treated in the Thompson Handicap. He will be ridden by T. Tito.

D. McAuley telegraphed L. G. Morris yesterday for Tresham in the Thompson Handicap. At Bulls Morris informed the writer that he would not be at the meeting, and unless he changes his mind the ride is likely to go to G. Young. H. Wiggins will ride Salamis in the Tinakori Handicap.

Gloaming has beeh withdrawn from the Trentham Gold Cup, so those who were anticipating seeing the old C“ampion over a two-mile course .will be disappointed. He will run in the North Island Challenge Stakes on Thursday, and it is quite likely that it will be'his last appearance at li«ntham. Consequently those who wish to see the grunt gelding in public should not miss this opportunity.

Merit is a probable starter in the Railway Handicap, and as Roy Reed was engaged for Ilka in that race, Merit will' be ridden by another horseman, probably W. S. Bagby. If the opinion of Mr. Henrys regarding Fool’s Paradise is correct, the Absurd gelding must have a great chance in the Thompson Handicap. Over nine furlongs at Awapuni he is asked to carry' 161 b. more than his Thompson Handicap weight. Everything that he meets in the Trentham race comes in on better terms against him. Martian Miss, Uralla, and Clarinda 111 b. each and Spoony 121 b. Many Kittle 101 b. come in best, and Good Sport and Muscari the lightest, 61b. each.

Mark Time,, looking big and lusty, had a race the second day at Bulls. He tailed the field all ,tht way., Another who got a good view of the race he contested was the steeplechaser Omaha, also carrying a lot of condition. Omaha was Having his first race since the last Grand National meeting, and he is not likely to be ready so early this jumping season as he was last. A. M. Wright has the veteran steeplechaser First Line in steady work at Foxton, and he is bringing m Nukumai this week. Rational is not the Rational of old, but he is coming to a little better form than he has shown during the last few months, and a fair race in the near future may not be beyond him. . Shut Eye has lots of pace in the early stages of his races, but he is a verv poor finisher. Kilburn, the' winner of the maiden race the first day Bid's shaped . as if he might be a useful hack. When he left Trentham it did not look as if he would stand a preparation. Surveyor will be ridden in the Thompson Handicap by R. Mclavish. Te Kara and Ngarara were shipped to Sydney last week from Auckland. Thev were accompanied by tnen trainer, J. Paul, and J. O’Shea, who is to ride them. The Trentham trained mare Wench has been entered for 1 urd ' e , , ;ll ’l steeplechase events at the Auckland Easter meeting. In addition to Merit s engagements in the big handicaps, Nadarino has been entered in the two-year-old races. ' Brigadier Bill had a fairly strenuous day on Saturday, starting in successive races. This is not a very frequent occurrence with running horses. Brigadier Bill acquitted himself well in both his starts and as he had not had a race for a while lie should strip in better order next time Euphonium received a bump the first day at Bulls which affected his chances. On Saturday he improved but could not win, running second to Gold Clip. The latter was well backed the first day, when he ran fourth. R Hatch has not got a great team to work on, and it was pleasing to see the success of Red Head at Bulls on Saturday. She is by no means a good one, anil will be hard tp place, and oulv vigorous riding by H. Wiggins got her' home from Merry Queen. The New Plymouth-trained hack. Mountain Ore, shaped at Bulls as if she would be a likely sort for a stake about Easter time at a minor meeting. Dubious raced at Bulls as if he would go on to better things He has more than the average pace of a hurdler and as he incurs no penalty for the High Weight Handicap at Trentham on Thursday he is sure to be one of the fancied runners. Bonomel raced the first day of the Rangitikei meeting like. a good one. disputing the race practically al the wav. It was thought he would go well on the second daj> over the shorter course, but he failed to repioduce his first day’s running. Filette, who ran a good race in the Rangitikei Cup, received a knock during the running which kept her out ol her second dav’s engagements. On the second day at Bulls Mr. Henrvs placed Fool’s Paradise on the same'mark with Rational at the head of the handicap in the open sprint. 9st. 81b. The long spell of fine weather has made tlic racing track at Trentham. a bit hard. It no rain falls in the interval the track will be watered to take the sting out of it.

Rafa behaved himself well on the tracks yesterday morning, and is evidently settling down from the wild manners he recently possessed. He is brimming over with vitality, and no doubt a great deal of his fractiousness was due to this cause more than to anv real vice. In the recent races he won he was not really tested. He won far too easily to gauge his real capabilities and it will be interesting to watch how he shapes against good company this week. There is no doubt that he' posseses pace far above the average. His courage is under suspicion in some quarters, but his appearance and general disposition give the impression that he will do his best.

The Motueka Racing Club and Waiapu Racing Club, two of the clubs that have been allotted totalisator permits, have informed the Racing Conference that they do not intend to make use of them this season. The Waimarino Racing Club will meet shortly to decide whether a race meeting is' to be held this season. In the meantime the club is applying to the conference for reregistration. The Waipapakauri Racing Club is applying for permission to hold its meeting at Whangarei in conjunction with the Whangarei Racing Club’s meeting on May 9. Income has been taken up again after a long spell. The Guianforte gelding looks well, but is not likely to be ready for serious business until the winter.

The rising two-year-old colt by Surveyor from Juanna that is owned by Mr. John Paterson has been broken in, and he~ is a very docile youngster. He is a well-developed colt, and his owner entertains high hopes of his future. Mr. Paterson has several youngsters by Surveyor that will be handled soon. The following are the entries for the principal races at the A. R. C. Easter meeting Easter Handicap: Master Doon, Hipo. Surveyor, Pelham, Uralla, Tresham, Reremoana, Matinee, Bright Day, Peter Maxwell, Passionate, Prettyman, Polonett, Deluge, Merit, Spoony, Steel Bar, Imperial Spark, Clandhu, Civility, Siaosi, Finelli, Illumination, Suggestion, Regent, Tuahine, Town Bank, Ruapapa, Gala Day, Broadwood, Charlady, Loyal Irish, Pouma, York Abbev; Lady Ridicule, Far North, Lucius, Gold Jacket, Master O’Rorke, Muscari, King Merv, Good Sport, Mountain Lion.

Merry Damon was beaten by a brilliant colt in King Lu over five furlongs on the first day ’at Paeroa, but he fairly smothered the opposition over six furlongs on the second day (writes “Archer”). Everybody was impressed with his form at the A.R.C. summer meeting, and there .is no doubt that he is really good. He should make his presence felt over the final furlong ot the Great Northern Champagne Stakes.

TRENTHAM TRACK NOTES

Monday. There was very little inte-esting work this morning, it being an off morning with most trainers, who confined their horses to pacing. The tan and grass tracks were in use. Gloaming was out early ,and did a round on the tan, pulling hard all the wav.
