RUGBY FOOTBALL

CALCUTTA CUP

SCOTLAND BEATS ENGLAND

(Rec. March 22, 5.5 p.m.) London, March 21. In a Rugby football match at Edinburgh, in the presence of a crowd of 60,000, Scotland defeated England by 14 points to 11. Scotland thus win the Calcutta Cup International Championship. _ The weather was bright following light falls of snow in the morning. The early scrums were fought with great spirit. Scotland attacked, but play was carried to the Scottish line, where Scotland was penalised, Luddington kicking a fine goal. Nelson scored for Scotland under the bar, Drysdale converting just before the interval. Wickes scored a glorious try, which Luddington converted. At halftime the score was England 8, Scotland 5.

Five minutes after the resumption of play Wakefield scored a try for England. No kick at goal took place, for after* the Scottish forwards had rushed out and stopped, they went on and kicked the ball away. As the referee had blown the whistle for no charge, the decision is inexplicable. Three minutes later Wallace scored for Scotland in the corner and Gillies converted. Tlie Scottish forwards were now playing splendidly, and England was sorely pressed. Five minutes before the finish Waddell dropped a goal for Scotland, who won by 14 points to 11.—Reuter.
