The Prime Minister, after a good night’s rest, showed marked improvement yesterday, and is in better health than at any time since his illness commenced. Mr. Massey, states an Auckland Press Association telegram, will remain in Auckland until to-night, and although lie is attending to the dispatch of urgent public business, he desires to obtain as much rest as possible. The Minister of Works and Railways (Hon. J. G. Coates) returned from Auckland yesterday. Mr. Justice Recd, who is at Present at Napier, will proceed later to Gisborne, and thence to Auckland. Mr. Justice Stringer will leave on a trip abroad early in the New Year.
Dr Noel S. Whitton, assistant surgeon at Christchurch Hospital died at Christchurch yesterday, states a Press Association message.
Mr H. Rands, M.A., B.Sc., chemist to tho Wellington Gas Company was on Wednesday invited by the chairman of directors of the company to receive a presentation on the eve ot his marriage. Sir Harold Beauchamp, a.s chairman, made tho gilt froni the directors, management, and start, anu it was of a silver tea service and oak tray bearing an appropriate inscription. The chairman wished Ml. Rands and his bride-elect every happiness and prosperity, and lie particularly referred to the excellent relations existing between the company and Mr Rands in his personal and professional capacities. Dr. G. I - Knight, Messrs. Gerald Fitzgerald, and A. Warburton (directors), and Mr. J. Kenimclv (general manager) were also present; and added their testimony vo the high esteem in which Mr. Rands is held by the company. The Royal Academy of Music London has " conferred the tit.e Hon. R A-M. upon Mr. Robert Parker in recognition of his greav services to music in New Zealand. Tins tide ts very rarely awarded. , Kvoti in England those who hold it are very fewj and, so far as is known, this is the first award in New Zealand or Australia.
Mr John Farrell, manager of the J C Williamson Grand Opera Singers, arrived from Auckland yesterday. Mr. H. W. Moss, who has been on a business visit to the Old Country, will return to Wellington by the s.s. Ruahine, which is expected here ou December 11. At the annua] meeting of the Iffiyjl Life-saving Society, Mr. G- S. Hill, who has held the position of chairman since tho inception of the society in the Dominion 14 years ago, was elected president the office being rendered vacant by the death of the late Hon. Dr. Newman. Complimentary references were made by various members of the splendid services rendered by the chairman on bohalt or fne society.
A Press Association cable message from London states that Professor Allan G. B. Fisher previously lecturer at tho Melbourne University, has accepted the Chair of Economics at the Otavo University. He received the London University’s Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in October. His age °s only 28 years. Ho will sail on the Jfooltan on December 19: News has been received iu Dunedin (states a Press Association telegram) of the death of the Rev. Peter Milne, of Ugnna, New Hebrides. He and his wife settled at Uguna in 1870Three of the family are missionaries. Mr H. T- Wheatley, who for the past five years has in charge of the stores department oi. the V acuum Oil Company, and who is leaving ta take up a responsible position at headquarters in Melbourne, was farewelled bv his fellow employees at a smoke concert at Dustin’s, rooms last eventing when best wishes were exptossed for Mr. Wheatley’s future career.
