STREET WIDENING
VIVIAN STREET SCHEME ABANDONED Some six years ago the Wellington City Council, in view of a proposal to widen Vivian Street by 10ft.., placed an interdiction against building out to the then building alignment. One of the most urgent reasons at that time for the proposed widening of that thoroughfare was to make it more reasonably available for a double tramway track between Cuba Street and Kent Terrace. That scheme, however, has been abandoned, partly because tho necessary relief for the tramway system is being provided at the present time by the continuation of the Wallace Street line to Adelaide Road. Another reason was the adoption of Ellice Street as tho route for the new tramway and traffic tunnel through Mount Victoria. That being decided upon, it was decided that the most direct east-west thoroughfare across the citv would be by widening Buckle Street,' Arthur Street, and the direct line through to Aro Street. With that action in view—the process is naturally a slow one —the interdiction was placed on building along the northern side of Buckle Street to Arthur Street, and all future buildings along that lino must be set back tho required feet. An arrangement to that end has already been made with the Education Board in respect to any new buildings which may be erected on the board’s property on the corner of Buckle and Tory Streets. The Town Clerk (Mr. J. R. Palmer) has received a requisition signed by seventeen residents for a light to be placed at the top of the right-of-way between Watson Street and Bell Street, Karori. This right-of-way is steeply graded, and as it becomes very slippery in wet weather, it is regarded as a danger. The . matter will come up for consideration at Thursday's meeting of the City Council.
