EMPIRE EXHIBITION
UNPRECEDENTED SCENES ON WHIT MONDAY
ENORMOUS ATTENDANCES (BY Telegraph— press associations Copyright. (Rec. June 10, 8.35 p.m.) London. June 9. There were unprecedented scenes at Wemblev. A Quarter of a million visitors were registered early in the afternoon, after which crowds continued to arrive at the gates opened to ticketholders. Owing to the congestion at the turnstiles queues hundreds of vards long waited good-humouredly. The restaurants were besieged, and all the avenues in the pavilions were thronged. The ambulance station dealt with over a hundred minor cases. The Exhibition grounds were brilliantly illuminated at night time, when at the firing of a maroon signal everyone joined in a great “Link of Empire” handshake, which completely encircled the lake, and included citizens from every corner of the Empire. The carnival procession was a remarkable sight.—Rente. (Rec. June 10, 10.55 p.m.) London, June 9. It is officially stated, that 321.232 peonle visited the Empire Exhibition sight.—Reuter. FINANCIAL OUTLOOK London, June 9. The controllers hope that, the imnrovement in attendances will be continued. It is no secret that the financial outlook has been causing grave concern, and probablv explains the feelers thrown out during the last fortnight regarding a proposal that the Exhibition should be reopened next year.—Aus.-N.Z. PROSPECTIVE EMIGRANTS’ INQUIRIES
(Rec. June 10, 8.35 p.m.) London, June 9. The business done at the Australian and New Zealand restaurants was highly successful. They were always packed, and there was a strong demand for apples, honey and butter at the New Zealand pavilion. As satisfactory evidence that the Exhibition has begun to. fulfil, its objective. there were many inquiries from prospective emigrants to Australia and New Zealand, with capital ranginr from £5OO to £15,000.— Sydney “Sun” Cable.
