The Prime Minister was in Dunedin yesterday. He attended the races, and opened the Winter Show. The death occurred yesterday after a long illness of Mr. David W. Duthie. late general manager of the National Bank of New Zealand. Mr. Duthie was born at Tokomairirq (Milton) in 1857, and joined the National Bank in 1874 as a junior clerk. Rising by successive steps, both in the South and in the North Island, he was, for many years, manager of the Auckland branch of the National Bank. On the retirement of Sir James Coates in June, 1915, Mr. Duthie was appointed general manager, a position which he held until July, 1922, when ill-health compelled his resignation. He was chairman of the Associated Banks in New Zealand from December, 1916, till 1921, a period of exceptional difficulty. Referring to Mr. Duthie at the time of his retirement, the Hon. W. P. Reeves, chairman of the National Bank, said: "Our sympathy with him is the deeper because we feel that his broken health is a penalty paid for his unflagging devotion to his duties. In the interests of the bank he exhausted his strength, and only sheer - necessity forced him to cease his unsparing labours.” Mr. Duthie leaves a widow and two sons and two daughters. The sons are: Mr. Norman Duthie, D. 5.0., accountant, and Mr. Alan Duthie, solicitor, both of Auckland, and the daughters Mrs. (Dr.) Abbott, of Auckland, and Miss Duthie, who is at present in England. A third son, Keith, was killed m France in August, 1917. A Press Association cable message from Sydney announces the death of Captain H. F. Lilyeblad, who arrived there from Auckland in 1880, where he had first Qualified as a master mariner.
