OIL STAIN. “Semco” asks how to remove a fairly large oil stain from some crash. . The application of eucalyptus oil is usually effective. Place a folded pad of cloth under the mark, and dip another cloth in eucalyptus, and rub the spots thoroughly, changing the surface of both the underneath pad of cloth and the one dipped in eucalyptus, should they become soiled. If tlie eucalyptus mark does not evaporate quickly, it can be removed with warm soapy water. TO WASH WHITE CLOTHES. “Thelma” asks what is an effective method of washing white clothes so that all the dirt is removed and the clothes kept a good colour. To ensure whiteness, the clothes should be soaked in warm, soapy water for at least 12 hours before they are washed. They should then be washed thoroughly with good soap, such parts as are more . soiled than others getting extra rubbing. Then they should be put into the copper, half full of cold water, with a little shredded soap or soap powder or flakes. One of the most common causes of bad colour is putting too many clothes into the copper at once. They should not be packed in until there is a solid mass in the copper, but the water should be able to flow throughout them freely. Rinse very thoroughly a few things at a time, in order to get rid of every drop of the soapy water. Thon blue and hang out. The work is facilitated by the use of a good soap,, soap powder, or other soap preparation. There are many of these on tho market, and. it. is best to try them for oneself,. Opinions differ so much about their comparative merits. HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS. It Is sometimes useful, to know tho correct names of Hie chemicals commonly used in the house. . Here are a few which are worth noting:— Ammonia is spirits of hartshorn. Bicarbonate of soda is hakinp- soda. Bitartrate of potash is cream of tartai. . . , Carbonate of calcium is chalk. Carbonate of soda is. washing soda. Chloride of sodium is salt. Magnesium sulphate is Epsom salts. Muriate of ammonia is sal ammoniac. Sulphate of sodium is Glauber s salts.

CLEANING WHITE FUR. Here is a quick and effective way of cleaning a white fur. Mix together equal parts of flour and very iinq salt. Heat the mixture in an oven, taking care not to scorch the flour, and then rub the mixture into the fur. Work the salt and flour down into the roots of the fur and keep on taking fresh supplies of the hot mixture. When the fur is clean shake it well, and remove all traces of the salt and flour with a soft brush. It is a good plan to hang the fur out of doors for a few hours on a dry day.
