THE RACING WORLD

MARLBOROUGH MEETING

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Watcher.”) Acceptances for all events on the first 'day of the Wanganui winter meeting will close on Monday at 8 p.m. The Marlborough meeting will Im concluded to-day. The accident to H. McSweeney and the absence of I’. Moßrearty and A. Thorner at meetings have left Trantham without the services of n good schooling rider for the jumpers at headquarters. It is understood that arrangements have been made for JKaan to come down from Palmerston and ride Solfanello and Militaire in their schooling efforts this morning. The balance of Mr. John A. Taylor’s team arrived at Trentham yestciday from Auckland, and will probably bo raced at the Otaki and Wellington winter meetings. They are in Temporary charge of George Jones, dominant and Kuhio will be raced, whilst the two-year-old filly is being let up until the spring of tho year.

Gamecock brought off a big sutpriso yesterday in tho waterlea Cup at Blenheim. He is a nme-year-okl by San Francisco-Brave Heart, but he lias been anything but true to his breeding, generally proving an unreliable customer. Formerly raced by his breeder, S’*r George Chnorci, he ha. 3 performed during the last season or two over hurdles, and his last start was an unplaced performance in the second hurdles at the Wellington spring meeting.

The consistent and much travelled Stream again proved herself a game little sort bv carrying Ost. 51b. tn victory in the Opawa Welter Handicap at Blenheim yesterday. She apparently thrives on/ change of scene, and the more racing she gets the better she runs.

Pantier has disappointed his admirers recently, but ho ran <t tan race yesterday at Blenheim, and vnen lie takes seriously to the hurdling game, at which he has been tried, he may turn out a fair sort.

Out at Trentham it was considered that Kilmar onlv bad to start in the Waira-n Hack Handicap at Blenheim yesterday to secure the. money. The good thing duly materialised, and considering the number of scratchings and the class of the field, she paid «■ good dividend.

En Route and Spooney will bo, railed to Wanganui to-day. R. 0 Donnell will take Militaire, Bright Eyes, and Ares through on Monday. . Still another case of a horse being missed from tho telegraphed list of acceptances, and then winning the race, has to be recorded. Bennie Gohl was not sent as an acceptor for the Beaver Hack Handicap at Blenheim yestarday, and she duly won, much to the chagrin of punters, who were waiting for her in another race in which she appeared. Ecuador was tried over a distance at Hawera on Thursday, and ho ran a creditable race. In the meantime he appears to be a better proposition

over sprint courses, mid further nuccosses should come his way uliorl ly before ho begins to got up in the weights.

Sunny Vaio was well supported on the concluding day nt Unworn., but, got hung up in tho tapes nt tho start, mid came in last. Ho is engaged at Wanganui. It is worth rcnionilimtng that ho came from tenth favourite the first day, to second position on the machine on Thursday, mid that there was no change of riders, Gray being up both days.

Judging by the results of tho hurdles at Egmont, one would conclude that the fields were fairly ordinary. When newcomers like Silk Rein (never in the hunt nt Trentham). and Mnngawhero, enn run so prominently, one Is inclined, to question tho quality of tho rest of tho fields. However, it will occasion no groat surprise to find one or two of tho unplaced lot, showing considerable improvement in the near future.

A Napier writer states that tho report that Mr. T. IT. Lowry is going to have his team trained in Ila,who’s Bay in the future is substantially correct. It, is said that they will nor, tie'located at Hastings, but at Greenmeadows.

Passin’ Through was responsible for a. couple of good performances nt Ilawera over the big fences. He finished second each day, and they were his first appearances in public this season. Ho has had plenty of experience over hurdles, nnd being only :i seven-year-old he may. make good over the big fences. His form this week is certainly good enough to expect bettor things from him during the winter.

Patuki has quite recovered from his accident, nnd during his absence from active work has filled out . into a commanding horse. Ho is rather backward at present, but should bo seen to advantage later in tho season.

Tho Auckland sportsman, Mr. E. Alison, returned to Auckland hv the Maheno on Tuesday. J. IT. Jefferd, the trainer of Rapine, and the jockey. 11. Reed, also returned by tho same steamer. Ridgway, rider of Lupass in the Ngamutu' Hack Handicap nt Hawera on Thursday, was suspended for a month for crossing.

Owner-trainer J. Cameron, who has been racing Tho Hawk and one or two others in Australia, is expected back in New Zealand by the Mnramn which is duo at Wellington next week. He will, according to latest private advice, bring his horses back with him. Cameron’s interests are mostly in Hawke’s Bay, nnd it is likely that he will remain in the Dominion tui some time, during the winter at least.

Apparent’,? Happy Warrior has made a good recovery from tho results of his mishap at Riverton, as he figures amongst the nominations for the Dunedin winter meeting.

Kikini, who won the Diggers’ Handicap and the Farewell Handicap at Reefton, has not been out of a place in her last eleven starts, her efforts resulting: in five firsts, four seconds, nnd two thirds.

Um Lliroi’-yeiir-old gelding Tiff, by Marl inn Liiily Disdain, has rejoined G. Murray Aynsle.y’s team, and will bo prepared for spring engagements. Till' showed some promise early this hoiihoii, hul, a. mishap in tho llangjora ('up I'ause. l his retirement. Ho is a full brol, bei to Bee and Snub.

Tho revolving hurdle has once more boi'ii rocciving ntlclilion ’nv the fact I hul Urn Auekhiml Racing Club has Hiiggoslcd to Llm patentee of n revolving Lop to n ht’rdlo that ho should nhico his idea la loro llm R.winjz Conforotmo. 11, innv bo an excellent thooi*y 10 hiivn lloxihlo or revolving Ums to 11 hurdle, hul in practice (says an exchange) they have proved to Im the most ilnngorotm obstacles that could ho cmistriiclcd. ns I hoy are nothing morel or loss I han a trap to trip up n horse and rider.

There is some talk of Duo again being put into work. \V. J. Donovan, nt I listings, will bo in charge of tlm son of Demosthenes.

Pnrody nnd Cupidon have arrived hack at Ricenrlon from their Auckland trip. Both aro reported as looking well.

F. D. Jones is back Riccarton with Glentrllin, Miiriliaupo. nnd Ballymena. Mustard J’ot nnd Zaragoza aro still nt. Auckland. The trouble with Mustard J’oL is the result of a severe kick, which ho sustained nt tho post in the Foley Memorial Handicap at Avondnlo. I’t is bad luck for his connections, ns Mustard Pot had proved that Im was back to form, and with tlm soft tracks now prevailing he looked likclv to add further to his winning record. He is unlikely to race again for some Limo. Tltki, winner of the hack steeplechase at Hawera on Wednesday, is trained hy tho former well-known liorsonian, 0. McCarten brother to tlm leading jockey. First Born was one, of tho outsiders in tlm hurdle race the first day at Egmont. Ho jumped only moderately, and finished well back, while he was scrutehed for his second day’s engagement.

Knighthood continues to shape well in his schooling tasks (says an Auckland exchanger With R. Watson in tho saddle, ho gave a dashing display when sent over hurdles at Ellerslie on Saturday. Up to Hie present Knighthood has been of small account, having shown no form on the flat, but it is not improbable that he will develop into a hurdle winner. J. T. Janiiosor returned to Auckland from Sydney by tin Maheno on Tuesday, with 11 yearlings he purchased at the Sydney yearling sales. There were also four other yearlings aboard the steamei. The youngsters all arrived in good order.

Mountain Peer sustained injuries nt Hastings which are likely, to keep him off th) scene for some time. T. Handley, manager of the Waikan’ao Stud, ’ who took the Waikanae yearlings to Sydney for the autumn sales, was among tho New Zealanders to return by the Maheno, which arrived at Auckland on Tuesday. In times past (says “Phaeton,” in the “New Zealand Herald”), it was not an uncommon occurrence to find jockeys conversing quite openly with speculators and others after leaving the enclosure. The rules of racing in fores m this Dominion for several years has prohibited such, and the section thereto reads: “No. jockey shall. after leaving tho birdcage, speak to or hold any communication with any i>erson other than a steward, tho starter or his assistant, or 1 o clerk of tho course.” An innocent infringement of the rulo at Avondale by Ashley Reed, who engaged in conversation with tho owner of Nigger Minstrel prior to the start for tho All-Aged Staloes, led to his being summoned to the stewards’ room, and a fine of T 5 was meted out for the 1 breach.

NOTES ON THE RACING BY THLEGBJLPH.— SpeciaI Cobrespondi.nt Blenheim, May 9. Gamecock’s win in the Water Sea Cup was not fluke, but a most decisive victory, which shows that tho old hurdler is thriving in his new environment on his owner’s sheep station near Blenheim, where he is used for hacking about the hills. He was sent out a rank outsider, apparently not being given a ehanco by the public, and his win was a complete surprise to all except his most intimate connections. In the early stages 'of the race Bayana and Askari made all tho running, but after half a mile had been covered Gamecock was rushed to the front. Sportsmen in the stands were rather amused at his spurt, and confidently waited for the moment when he would cave in and give tho (favourite Bitters, a chance, but he never showed a sign of stopping. At tho entrance to the straight, Pontier was pushed up to him, and actually headed him, but he camo again when called on, and, stalling off the challenge, won most handsomely by a length. The favourite Bitters, finished fast enough to beat Askari for fourth place. Scratchings in the Wairau Hack Handicap reduced the field to four starters, and left the Trentham trained Kilmar with the easiest of tasks. She won very easily by a length. Silurian, who hails from. Rolleston, in Canterbury, justified his trip to Blenheim by accounting for the Hillersden Trot in comfortable fashion from Bombard and Welcome Boy. He gave a faultless exhibition once fie got fairly going, and should be heard of again before he returns home. After letting the others have all the limelight in the earlier stages of the Opawa Welter Handicap. Stream came to light with a marvellous run on the outer at the business end .of the journey, and in a rattling finish settled All Gold by a length. It was a great performance, and shows that the Sunny Lake gelding is st the ton of his form. Bonny Gold was a good favourite in the Beaver Hack Handicap. The Bolter set out to win on his own and led the others by three lengths as they turned into the straight, but the favourite had too many guns for him in the run home and won a very nicely judged race by a neo?;, and Martinique, after missing a chance of getting through in the straight, ran third. The Autumn Handicap went to Barleycorn, who is racing in the name of Mr. J. F. D- Corry, a son of Mr. J. J. Corry. His win represents the young owner’s first victory, and was a, popular one. Barleycorn is a much improved horse, and the result was never in doubt. Island made all the early running but could not stay it out. Happy Days was going fast at the finish and ran into second money on the post. Proud Joyce, who hails from Richmond, was backed down to a short price 'in the Wither Trot, and duly won. She was on terms with the limit horses after half a mile had been covered and when called on left the others behind. Bonlita was made a hot order in the Soldiers’ Hack Handicap, the public apparently not having noticed Martinique’s hard luck earlier in the day. Bonlita had every chance and was in the van till the straight was reached, but when Martinique was called on he passed the colt in a flash and won by half a length. Bonnic<Gold, carrying a 71b. penalty for her earlier win, was third, and Axle was fourth. The last named was in a bad mood, and caused a lot of delay at the start.
