FALSE PRETENCES CHARGE
DISPOSAL OF BUILDING MATERIAL. A middle-aged man, Francis Borrill Cowling, appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M-, m tho Magistrate’s Court yesterday on three charges of false pretences, involving £3O. _ It was alleged that accused had obtained the money by falsely representing that he held the sole New Zealand rights to disposing of and deal with certain building materials on behalf of the Homobrie Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Sydney. In applying for a remand until May J 6, Chief-Detective Kemp said that accused had arrived from Australia About six months ago, but, when questioned, had declined, to say whether lie was married or single. Accused, from the dock, asked for a longer remand, to enable him to get In touch with evidence in Australia. The whole matter, ho said, was amazing to him. His Worship: I don’t want to go fnto the merits. Accused declared that he had never sought to defraud anyone. He referred to a letter from the principal of the firm, which the police had withheld. Chief-Detective Kemp: We have reason to believe that that letter might be a . forgery, and that is the reason for its detention. The remand was granted,. accused being admitted to bail, self in £l5O, with one surety of a like amount.
