HUTT ROAD

ANOTHER OFFICER TO CONTROL TRAFFIC'

“That an additional member of the ■taff be appointed for traffic control work on the Hutt Road, and that a motor-car be purchased for his use,” was a recommendation made to the City Council last evening by the Finance Committee.

Council Mitchell: Is this a recommendation from the Hutt Road Board? Who is going to pay for the car?' .The Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright): The Hutt Road Board.

Councillor M. F. Luckie said that a good deal of additional labour would be required in controlling traffic on tho Hutt Road, and it would bo just as well to make it clear now that the Hutt Road Board would have to foot the bill. The Mayor gave an assurance that the expense would be met by the Hutt Road Board.

Councillor T. Forsyth said it was very pleasing to hear and read the nice things which were being said and written about the portion of the road formed. The new road had been formed out of the Hutt Road loan, and, therefore, the road was under the control of the Hutt Road Board. It would be necessary for the Works Committee to consider at an early date the advisability of procuring a similar plant to that used on the Hutt Road. • Councillor W. H. Bennett said he had that day met a prominent member of tho Hutt Road Board, who had declared that the plant which had been used was the property of the City Council, as the council was charging the board so much for the use of the plant-. It appeared to him (Councillor Bennett) that the affairs of the council in connection wiitli the Hutt Road were in a terrible mess. Councillors would remember that when the plant had been ordered there had been a good deal of discussion as to which work it should bo first used upon —the city streets or the Hutt Road. The Mayor said it was all “humbugging nonsense” for Councillor W. H. Bennett to talk in that strain. It was purely talking to tho gallery;. When the council ordered the plant it had no money to pay for it. The council that year had come out with a balance of about £6OO. The Hutt Road plant had cost £6OOO. and where was tha money to come from? Councillors were only wasting time in talking nonsense. Councillor Luckie said that even if the council had borrowed tho money to pay for tho plant from the Hutt Road Board, it was still the property of tho council. Councillor Mitchell said if the Mayor could make arrangements with the Hutt Road Board for the use of tho plant he would be doing the city a signal service.
