NEW NAMES FOR CITY STREETS

''Who is the genius who persists in continually altering the names of our streets?" asked the Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright. M.P.), at last night’s meeting of the City Council when the By-laws and Street Lighting Committee brought down a list of about 150 new names of 'city streets, with a recommendation for their adoption. "I think it is the greatest mistake to go on everlastingly like this. . . There are people who have lived here for 40 or 50 years, and they won’t know where they are. .... Others again entertain sentimental ideas about; out streets. . ■ . Who is the genius that alters these streets and on whose aw thority is it done. ... I can’t find out." Mr.' M. Luckie (chairman of the committee) said it did not require a genius to do such a simple matter. The suggestion had emanated from the superintendent of the Fire Brigade as a means of being able to readily ascertain the location of fires. It should be borne in mind that over n period of forty or fifty years the council had taken in a greater area and had incidentally taken .portions of streets. Before they could be gazetted, the streets must bo advertised. The recommendation was adopted.
