£1000 SLANDER CLAIM
— VERDICT FOR DEFENDANT By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston North, May 8. In the Supreme Court to-day Ernest Ball, tobacconist. Foxton, claimed from John Knowles Horn'olow, journalist, Foxton, £lOOO damages, for alleged slander.
Plaintiff alleged that in November last defendant, in the main street of Foxton, falsely and maliciously spoke and published concerning plaintiff the following words: “You are a bookmaker, and aro breaking tho law every day” ; such words meaning that plaintiff had committed and was committing a criminal offence.
Defendant denied lie spoke and published concerning plaintiff the words complained of or similar words, and denied also that the words complained of had tho meaning alleged or any defamatory meaning; further, that if spoken by him, they were true in substance and fact.
The jury found for defendant. Plaintiff, under cross-examination, mad© admissions that he had been concerned in betting transactions, and several . witnesses gave evidence as to making bets with him.
