EGMONT MEETING

TROTTING AT FORBURY PARK

NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “The Watcher.”) Nominations fo? the Otaki winter meeting will close at 8 p.in. to-day. The Marlborough Baciiig Club’s autumn meeting will bo commenced to-day and concluded to-morrow. After a run of bad luck at recent meetings, Ilchutai has made good, and her win at Hawera .yesterday under the substantial weight of Jst. 121 b. was a good performance. She was the only double winner at the meeting. Mangawhero was not long in making good at the jumping game, and ho accounted for a fairly useful field in the hurdles at Hawera yesterday. Some of the others who finished behind him, however, are more likely to show improvement in the near future. Sir Rosebery jumped well enough in his initial attempt at steeplechasing at the fleet meeting to indicate that he would be useful during the winter, and with a third and a first at the Egmont meeting, he has made a promising start. One o>f the Auckland contingent in Peter Maxwell, a six-year-old gelding by Marble Arch —Jena, ran a couple of good races at Hawera yesterday, and was unlucky in filling second bqrth on both occasions. The Lamb, who was a firm favourite at Hawera the first day, was badly ridden, and finished out of a place. Considering the circumstances he paid a good price when he won yesterday. When right, Income is one of the best handicap hoises in the Dominion, but his form recently has not been good, and ho lias been neglected by backers. His only previous win this season prior to yesterday was in the chief handicap on the second day of the Stratford New Year meeting. Now that the tracks are soft he may win again soon if ho keeps anything like sound. In hn< first seven starts this season Yoma had not been outside a place, und as he ran a very good fourth to a good one in Te Kawa on the opening day at Hawera, it was not surprising to find him playing a prominent part in the decision of the concluding event yesterday. He is a four-year-old gelding by Campfire—Martingale, and is a full brother to the Taranaki sprinter Pouma, who also bobs up occasionally. Pittsworth ran well in the Autumn Steeplechase at the A.R.C. meeting, and he appears to have done well in the interval. Ho should show up before the winter racing is concluded. Archie (Rutherford) . was schooled over hurdles at Ellerslie on Monday morning, while Just Quietly was also given a lesson toy the same jockey, and showed some aptitude for . the game. Glenotus (E. Rae), who appears among the nominations foi the Great Northern Steeplechase, went over the fences on the flat at Ellerslie on Monday morning,, and gave a good exhibition of jumping. That speedy mare, Lady Ridicule, who has been in training at Moi rinsville during the current season, is back at Ellerslie again. She .is now being trained by N. Cunningham, (says the Auckland “Star”), and, as her latest form has not. been up to the required standard, it will be interesting to see whether a change ot trainers will effect improvement. The only alterations in the _ conditions governing the Grand National programme are that in the Hunt Club Cup. the words “Hack races excepted be added after tl ' hack conditions, and the penalty condition of 1 sovs. in the Grand National Hurdle Race bo altered to 200 sovs.

Koval Star continues to pet throußh satisfactorily schooling tasks at Iticcarton, and will probably make his debut as a hurdler at Winfiatui next month.

Mustard Pot, who was booked. to return home to Christchurch "it' l Zarasoza this week, proved to be in a very bad wav on Sunday, and had to receive further veterinary attention. He has since shown great improvement, though it will be some time yet before he can be moved. The pair are at present in charge of HJury, at Ellerslie. H. Gray, on his return to the Dominion, commenced a very successful run in the matter of ridinß winners, but just when he got within striking distance of McCarten bis look deserted him, and for a time he has been unable to salute the iudse. He returned to form in unmistakable fashion at Hawera yesterday, riding the last four winners.

St-(land did not act up to his form at Hawera for he fell on both davs. On Wednesday, Walls, who had the mount, had a nose broken. Starland aonarently renuires a little more experience at steeplechasing.

Martian Miss made a great bid to win the chief handicap yesterday. She led ah the way till well into the straight, where she was collared by Income and Pater Maxwell, and Gray only cot Income home by a head, while Martian Miss was stopping a bit at tho finish.

Civility was well fancied for her engagement yesterday, as she ran third tho first day after being knocked back in tho running, but she failed to get into tho money.

Avola is a pretty speedy custom©!, and she showed good form. at Hawera, running tliird yesterday in the open sprint. She should bo able to improve on this at some of the meetings shortly. She is a three-year-old by Bisognc—Avena.

From being second favourite in tho hack stcenles the first day at Hawera. San Forte retreated in the betting yesterday in a remarkable manner, and was returning a great price had he got tin. Ho should be improved for his Wanganui engagements.

L’Amour. who has been off the scene for some months. went out both days at Hawera neglected in the, betting, and he was not prominent cither day.

Income started ninth favourite m tho open sprint the first day, and was backed down to third position on the maciiino yesterday, indicating that his improved allowing was not unexpected.

The result of the ’’hvn Thousand 1 Guineas in England would not be 1111i expected, as Diotihon. one of the best I two-year-olds last season, was being I freolv discussed ns a Herby possibility i when the last mails left. . His success 1 Yesterday would cause him to harden in flio market, for the Blue Ribbon. Ho is a chestnut bv Grand Parade from Uonotta. bv. Donovan from Rinovata, bv Wonlock from Traviata. by Cre1 morne. He was bred by Lord d Ab--1 ernon and the Aga Khan gave 4000 • guineas for him as a yearling. Amongst his successful two-voar-old races was the .Tilly Stakes at Newmarket, carrying 9st. The Aga Khan also owns the living fillv Mumtaz Mahal, and as the cable makes no mention of her It , is probable she did not start.

The first race at, Marlborough to-day will start at 11.15 a.m. Trantham horses should all perform well in their engagements, and of the other visitors Ritters and Bonnie Gold have shown form good enough for the company they will meet. There was support for Sir Pam nt the concluding event yesterday, but third was the best he could do. Yoma won very easily.
