POLICE AND CIVIL CASES The police cases in the Alagistrate’s Court yesterday were dealt with by Mr. E. Page. S.AI. On a charge of helpless drunkenness, Alfred John Johansen was ordered to be detained at the Roto Roa Inebyiates’ Home for twelve months. A young seaman. Joseph Roberts, who had deserted from the liner Tainui, wps sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, “The probation officer does not recommend probation, but as there were extenuating circumstances I’ll make the term of imprisonment short," said His Worship, with reference to George Tallis Bai.ey, who had stolen carpenters’ tools valued at £1 Is. Accused was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment. For insobriety, William Murphy, a. fifth offender, was fined £3, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, and a further £2 for committing a breach of his prohibition order. Joseph Murphy, a third offender, was fined £l. with the alternative of going to gaol for three days.
