TAXING THE MOTORIST
ON PETROL, OR TIRES. OR BOTH? The provincial executives which reported to the Farmers’ Union Dominion Executive yesterday on theesubject of a petrol tax were almost unanimously in favour of a tire tax.
Mr. A. E. Harding (Auckland) urged immediate action, saying that the Hon. J. G. Coates was doing his best to provide a suitable reading scheme and it was up to the farmers to give their assistance. He suggested that the union should draw up a resume of the reasons both for and against the two taxes. Mr. Coates favoured the dual tax, and it was a known fact that this had proved successful where ever adopted. particularly in America, where there were 100 cars to every one in New Zealand. The chairman suggested that the replies should be forwarded to the Minister with a request that he submit the details of his proposed scheme of dual taxation.
It was decided to notify tho Minister that if a tire tax was out of the question, the union would support any tax suggested by the Minister, as it was recognised that something should be don© immediately.
