QUESTION OF SELECTORS TTIE MARIST TROUBLE Presided over by the chairman (Mr. S. S. Dean) the Management Committee ot the New Zealand Rugby Union met last night. There were also present: M’essre. E. Little, Ev McKenzie, E. Wylie, A. C. Kitto, T. A. Fletcher, C. Muilany, and AV. F. Hornig. A telegram was received from Otago empihatioxlly protesting against the elimination of the whole of last year’s eelection committee, and objecting to the geographical situation of the selectors appointed to oct this year. “I think that the protest as far Otago is concerned is a little belated,” commented the chairman. “They should have every reason to be satisfied with the position." Stowart (Otago) in hia place. After a discussion in committee, it was further decided to adhere to the previous resolution regarding the number of selectors to act in connection with the selection of the All Black team. The position of the Marist Club, Christchurch, was considered, when the Auckland Union forwailled the following clauses . from a letter received from the local Marist Club: "Clause 3— That this meeting respectfully suggests that in order to prevent a similar happening in the future the New Zealand Rugby Union should consider the advisability of so amending its constitution as to enable a club suspended for any reason whatever to appeal to some arbitration body. Clause 4—That the New Zealand Rugby Union be asked if in its opinion the Canterbury Union, were justified in suspending without a bearing, and subsequently cancelling the affiliation of the Christchurch Marist Club for its refusal to apologise for and withdraw the letter in dispute." Regarding clause three, the chairman expressed the opinion that there was no necessity for the parent body to alter its constitution. Mr. E. Wylie: The Marist Club has the right of appeal now. Mr. C. Muilany: Even although they have gone over to League? The chairman; The Canterbury Rugby Union ought to advise us of their decision. Mr. Muilany declared that the entire team had thrown in their lot with the opposition code. The chairman said that any appeal must come through the Canterbury Union, and if the Marist Club.fo.lowed that course the New Zealand Union must hear it. Dealing with clause 4. Mr. E. Wylie said that it was not the function of the union to deliver an opinion on such points, except when, a matter was raised officially on appeal. A motion along those lines was carried, together with the following decisions: "That the Canterbury Union and all other unions be asked to supply the names of p’.ayers who have gone over to League; the Canterbury Union to ba advised that their rules are in conflict with the New Zealand Union’s rules, and be requested to bring them into line, and be asked to supply a report of the meeting at which the Manst matter was dealt with, and that all unions be requested to forward copies of their by-laws for record purposes, and that a sub-committee bo appointed to see that they are in order." . A sub-committee was appointed to drew up specifications regarding the compilation of a text book on Rugby for use among the schools. . The reinstatement of the following plavers was granted:—H. P. Helsby and J. Smith (Henderson). L. R. Eide (Morningside), C. Howie (Auckland), G. B. B'.ackburn, W. Cowley and L. Parley (Kaiapoi), J. D. Manihira (Rapaki). TRIAL MATCHES PRICES OF ADMISSION FIXED. The admission charges, for the trial matches to be played prior to the departure of the AH Black Jteam for England were fixed by the Mamigenient Committee of ihe New Zealand Rugby Union last night. Discussing the recommendations of the AVellington Union the chairman (Mr. S. S. Dean) remarked that the prices suggested were aoout right. He said that as many as 60 or 70 players would be travelling, and the expense, as a consequence, was going to be tremendous. “AVe don t wfFi to make anv money out of it, added.
