i PURCHASE OF SUBMARINES PROPOSED Sydney, April 29. Speaking on defence, Mr. Bowden ■ said that it was proposed to purchase two submarines of long cruising range, and also to establish an oil and fuel base, probably at Port Darwin. The Ministry also proposes to build up munition supplies. The scheme, which will take four years to complete, provides for the manufacture of ammunition for guns up to six-inch. That for larger guns will have to be imported. Proposals have also been made for an increase in the period of compulsory training by one year.—Press Assn. PROBABLE EXPENDITURE (Rec. It is expected that the initial expenditure on the Commonwealth defence programme outlined by Mr. Bowden, the Minister of Defence, vyill amount to seven millions, spread over a short period. It stated this sum will place the Australian defences in a satisfactory position, and enable a quick extension to be made in an emergency.
