TECHNICAL COLLEGE

SATISFACTORY INCREASE IN ATTENDANCES. The monthly meeting of the Technical College Board of Governors was held in the board room adjoining the new college last night. Mr. W. H. Bennett presided. In welcoming the members of the board to the new establishment, the chairman referred to the growth of technical education, and expressed pleasure at the significant attendance returns. He desired to voice liis deep appreciation of the services rendered by the director (Mr. J. H. Howell) in connection with the new building, and moved that the meeting record its appreciation and bring tho matter under tho attention of the board. This was carried by acclamation. The director reported that up to March 29 the most marked growth had taken place in the commercial department, especially in accountancy and law, where, in some classes, the numbers had almost doubled. It was also pleasing to note that the increase in carpentry and joinery classes had been well maintained. In dressmaking, the numbers had necessitated an extra class. The total number of individual students enrolled in the evening school and art school was 1150, as compared with 998 for last year, an increase of 152. In the Technical High School the total enrolment was 634, as compared with 585, an increase of 49. The total increase in tho number of individual students for both day and evening classes was 201. In response to the representations made on 1 ehalf of the board, the Public Trustee had consented to modify Hie scheme for the award of Callender Memorial scholarships so that they may be held for two years instead of one year only, and tho amount of tho scholarship may be increased from £5 to 110. The Minister was to be congratulated on the progressive step taken in appointing a woman for the first time in New Zealand as inspector in Lime Science and home arts in primary, secondary, and technical schools. The report was adopted.
