THE AMATEUR RULING TILDEN’S POSITION (Rec. April 28 7.25 P ™.) Now York, April 27. A movement has begun, among constituent members of the United States Lawn Tennis Association for a ruling bv the Amateur Rules Committee concerning player writers. The Tennis Club, the largest member of the association, has already framed a petition, which the Chicago Lawn Tennis Association, it is reported, will duplicate Mr. Edward Conhn, president of the Lawn Tennis Umpires’ Association, and ono of the leading figures in American tennis, is sponsoring the movement. He has just returned from a tour of twenty-five cities, and has sounded the feeling in local tennis organisations, and found that the sentiment strongly favours lilden, whose contention that if he loses his amateur standing in 1925 it means that he has no right to claim an amateur s standing now is considered to be justified. An attempt will be made to permit those who are already engaged m journalism to continue to do so, but a 1 other players will be forbidden to become journalists hereafter. BRITISH HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS.
London, April 26. At Torquay, in the British hardcourt championshijis, the finals are as follow • Men’s singles: Randolph Lycett beat C. van Lcnnepp (Holland), 6 —l, 3—6, 6 —4, 6 —4. Ladies’ singles : Miss Ryan beat Mrs. Beamish, 6—2, 6 —2. Men’s doubles: F. Lorymer-Riseley and J. D. Wheatley beat J. B. Gilbert and D. M. Greig, 11—9, 2 —6, B—6,8 —6, 6—4.
Ladies’ doubles: Miss Ryan and Mrs. Shepherd-Barron beat Mrs. Colgate and Miss Rose, 6 —4, 6—2. Mixed doubles: Lycett and Miss Ryan beat Wheatley and Miss Colyer, 6—l, 10 —B.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
